Picking up your dog's poo.

Xmas day family walk this morning. Enforced, as far as I'm concerned, I'd rather stay home tending the dinner as I am the person most responsible. A brisk hour's walk along the seafront. Not on the beach, just the concrete prom. Naturally, the dog walkers are out in force.
I'm not a dog owner, or even a dog liker, but, you know, if they're on a lead and under control, live and let live. (Not that they always are, but that's not the purpose of my question)

I do this walk pretty regularly because it's exhilarating in wild weather, and pleasant in spring and autumn. Summer there's not much shade so I keep it short. The dogwalkers around have many shortcomings. The users of long leads can trip you up or get wound round you. People who don't believe their dog needs a lead at all can be irritating when their dog just wants to say hello.
Up in your face and leaving doggy prints on your coat. Nope.

Hello? I don't want to say hello to your dog. Thank you very much.
However, the vast majority cause no problem to me at all. Most dogs I encounter are on leads, under control, and perfectly amiable in their ignoring of me. I do not love dogs, and if I'm out and about and they leave me alone,
I have no problem with them.

But I have noticed something quite important. Especially today. This morning.
I HAVE noticed it before but not really thought about it in depth.
Out of about 20 dogs, who did a poo, 4 of them did a really liquid poo. Which was impossible for the owners to pick up.

The ones who did a solid poo, most of the owners (not all by any means!!} picked up and put it in a bag. But the ones whose dogs had dodgy guts just left it in a big pool of brown shite.
I get it. How can you pick that up!?

So, my business venture is, for dog owners to carry around a supply of crystallising stuff, (DH is a chemist) so that if your dog has diarrhea all over the prom or a kids playground, would you fork out and carry it around with you? Just pour it over immediately, and the warmth would make it into a big lump that you could take away and get rid of, and not leave for kids to slip in.

We are seriously on the brink of putting money into this idea. I have concrete personal experience that this happens regularly enough (several times a day on even my own local beach!) that if every single dog owner who knows that their dogs will produce loose and unpickupable shits. . . .I'd make a mint.

Will those people fork out money for a bagful of salts, to make their pets loose motions easier to just take home with them and dispose of.

I really very much doubt it. I won't make any millions out of this.
They simply do not care. If it's all liquid shite they will just leave it there for kids to skid in.

Have a little think, dog owners.

Our dog has quite a sensitive belly to certain foods and if he eats things he shouldn't you definitely notice the difference the next day. I can imagine a lot of dogs get extra treats or get a hold of food they shouldn't at Christmas, so I imagine that may play a part in it.

I remember in primary school if a kid was sick on the carpets the welfare lady would pour cat litter on it to help it clump together and make it easier to clean up. I wonder if something like that would work?

TunaSpaghettiSub · 26/12/2022 11:41

Absolutely would buy! My dog once did this about a 5 minute walk from the shop, I cleaned up what I could then bought a bottle of water from the shop (with the sports lid) went back and squirted it away. As a child owner as well as a dog owner I hate with a passion people leaving their dog poo

Mnbvcxz123 · 26/12/2022 11:42

Yeah, like I say, not a serious suggestion to ban dogs but so many dog owners are just completely selfish and the idea of allowing “runny poos” to be left out is just awful!

I definitely teach my children to avoid it but often they are left in grasses etc where nobody can see them!

Anyway, I’m just being grumpy! Have a good Boxing Day everyone xxx

stevalnamechanger · 26/12/2022 11:50

As a dog Walker , yes !

America12 · 26/12/2022 12:16

There's a similar product used on coaches to solidify vomit so you can scoop it up.
Good idea.

OneTC · 26/12/2022 12:27

Saw someone out with a lovely looking boxer when it was really cold. They sat outside drinking coffee and chatting for ages while their dog sat/lay on the cold floor, clearly uncomfortable and letting them know with a bit of whining. They told the dog off for whining!

Later I saw them smearing a runny shit over the pavement in a busy pedestrianised area and laughing about what a bad job they made.

Was tempted to just take it off them

PoseyFlump · 26/12/2022 13:50

What, the dog poo?

KimberleyClark · 26/12/2022 14:01

I am not currently a dog owner but have been and probably will be again. I also walk other people’s dogs occasionally. I think this is a brilliant idea and would buy it like a shot.

KimberleyClark · 26/12/2022 14:04

Just to add I take kitchen roll and spray bottle for runny poos but that doesn’t do a brilliant job either.

SapphireEyes88 · 26/12/2022 14:26

I would love this. My bitch will pretty much only poop on paths and has frequently soft stools. I have been known to take a 6pt bottle of water and scrubbing brush with me but it isn't always practical and although I pick up what ai can, there's often a smear on the path. And the community fb page is full of complaints and pictures of (usually fox) poo, so I'm paranoid!
Having said that, I'd be worried about environmental repercussions, how good it actually is and affordability...

ASCB31 · 26/12/2022 14:32

As a dog owner (who's one dog often has runny poo that I'm then trying to find leaves to use to scrape up 🤦🏻‍♀️) I would 100% buy this!

yaflouloci · 26/12/2022 14:32

In those circumstances I'd hope it was going to rain soon or squirt some water on it. My dogs have done squirty shits in residential areas and I have knocked on the nearest house and asked for hot soapy water.

I think you should have stayed in cooking the dinner though. Days like today and all the bored people out walking ruin my daily walk.

NewMoonPhase · 26/12/2022 08:53

What's the name of this?

The one I use is called Posh Paws poop freeze. There are other brands available.
I've used Raid freeze spray before, which you can buy from Wilko. It's supposed to be used to freeze and kill insects, but I've used it on dog pooh to good effect.

Mentalpiece · 26/12/2022 15:02

@NewMoonPhase Also, get a child's plastic spade, you know the ones that you get at the seaside, cut the handle off and it makes a great pocket size poop scoop for when you're out dog walking.

jevoudrais · 26/12/2022 15:20

My dogs genuinely don't do runny poos! I'm wondering if this is unusual? Or maybe mine just have guts of iron...

MajesticWhine · 26/12/2022 15:24

I'd buy anything to make it easier to pick up a runny poo. Good idea.

It's not healthy for dogs to do runny poos but it's not abnormal either.

At the beach where OP was walking, it's quite common as the salt water can make them sick.

NoraButty · 26/12/2022 15:36

OP I’d buy it. My dog suffers from colitis and at it’s worst I would carry round a small bag of sand and a bottle of squirty water, either or both would do an okay clean up job but I like the sound of yours better.

Spellegrin · 26/12/2022 15:49

I think with the correct advertising it could work. We were on holiday a few years ago (can't remember where it was...Europe, maybe Greek island or Italy) and everyone we saw walking their dogs carried a small bottle of water. After the dog had pissed up against whatever it wanted to piss up against, the owner sprayed water. I thought that was brilliant. Wish there were owners like that in the UK.

We all just seem to put up with dogs lifting their legs on trees, sides of houses, car tyres etc. Maybe because there are too many dogs I get annoyed.

magicstar1 · 26/12/2022 15:58

I’d buy it for my dog. She had a phase of runny poos and it was awful. Once right outside someone’s house. I brought her home and went back with a brush and a bucket of hot water. I knocked in first and Told her not to let the kids run out until I’d cleaned up. That stuff you mention sounds great.

Mylittlesandwich · 26/12/2022 16:07

I'd be interested in something like that. My dog had some tummy issues recently and it was mortifying. Picked up what I could and tried to wash away what I couldn't. So long as the product is non toxic in case any of it got missed or he stuck his nose in while I was cleaning I'd probably get it.

OnceRuralNowUrbanbliss · 26/12/2022 16:43

Yes please! I'd love to stock on this. Had to make do with a load of tissues and wished I'd had some disposable latex gloves with me today. Perhaps you could include a pair and supply extras to accompany it too?

Let us know when it is launched please.

Bloody hell. I'd be worried about kids and dogs with that stuff. Dogs lick their paws.

Where do you all live to come across all this runny shit?! This thread is bizarre.

Thehop · 26/12/2022 19:17

If your dog has a runny poo you just sprinkle it with cat litter and then pick it up?

Do you generally carry cat litter?
