OOH Vet has been called, awaiting callback

6.6 year old French Bulldog.

Was running around fine earlier then suddenly seemed to be walking funny. I thought it was his hip at first as he seemed wobbly on his hips but then it looked like his right back foot as he wasn’t putting weight on it. No obvious injury, no crying out - nothing

Over the course of the day the limp has got worse to the point now where he’s struggling to get up, he can’t get comfortable, his legs are shaking … he just hobbled to the back door but gave up half way and laid on the floor, then he couldn’t get up again. Now both legs seem weak. He looks depressed and in pain. Vet will be calling back but in the meantime, what could this be??

Im thinking slipped disc? My imagination is running away with bone cancer, hip dysplasia and god knows what else but it was all so sudden, he’s gone down hill quickly in the matter of hours. Not eating now either.

Poor dog
I think that breed is very prone to spinal issues.
I hope he recovers asap

ladydimitrescu · 25/12/2022 23:03

As above, they are very prone to problems with their spines as well as awful breathing difficulties. Hope the vet is in touch soon x

Branleuse · 25/12/2022 23:06

Has he got hold of any chocolate?
Soumds a bit like how my dog was after stealing an easter egg a couple of years ago.
I hope everything is ok x

PoinsettiaPosturing · 25/12/2022 23:07

Spinal issues are rife in French bulldogs. So many inherited health issues with the breed as a whole. Hope the vets are able to get back to you asap

CrapBucket · 25/12/2022 23:10

My friends dog had this, it was an infection, horrible at the time but he is right as rain now - I hope this is reassuring and that your lovely dog is ok soon.

WormEater · 25/12/2022 23:11

OP, this could be wildly off the pace, but have you got any new scent diffusers or smellies around the place. I think some dogs react badly to air fresheners for some reason, and because it is Christmas you may have something new around that he has reacted to. Particularly as his breed may be more sensitive to breathing issues.

WormEater · 25/12/2022 23:12

The chocolate / raisin thing is a possibility as well?

allboysherebutme · 25/12/2022 23:14

Do you not have a 24 hour vets you can take him to. X

Krismus · 25/12/2022 23:16

No chocolate or raisins
We did get new Yankee candles but havnt had them on

The weird thing is, earlier on this morning he was laid on the sofa, turned to wash himself and I heard an almighty crack, sounded like a bone breaking! But he didn’t react at all, just carried on washing himself so I assumed the noise must have been something else. It was about an hour later that he suddenly started limping.

*call you back

Slipped disc if you heard a crack. This is why these dogs should be banned they come with so many health problems it isn't fair

Namaste6 · 25/12/2022 23:19

Sounds like a spinal issue. All you can do is keep him calm and comforted until the vet arrives or calls.

But wouldn’t he have reacted at the time? He was still running around fine for an hour after this

Ligaments make loud noises. Just try to keep him still and have something under him that he can wee on. If it wasn't for the snapping sound, I'd say that a neurological condition could be going on. I've known Frenchies to have all sorts of stuff and bounce back, after costing a fortune.

thelobsterquadrille · 25/12/2022 23:21

It could be anything but I agree with PP that spinal problems are the most likely cause with him being a Frenchie, though it could be cruciate injury too.

I hope the vet can give you some answers soon 💐

honeyandbutterontoast · 25/12/2022 23:24

IVDD. He needs a neurologist ASAP. Don’t let the vet fob you off with an X-ray, he will need an mri and quickly too or the paralysis could be permanent. An X-ray won’t show disc damage.

ive been through this with my dog. Fortunately hers was just a herniated disc and didn’t need surgery. It’s horrendous and I’m sorry for any pet owner having to go through it.

I hope you hear back from the vets really soon.

Yabado · 25/12/2022 23:26

If you have a cage / crate i would put him in there with lots of pillows / blankets and keep him there till you manage to get to the vets to prevent any further possible damage

bulldog breed are great at hiding any pain

Good luck I have a knobhead. I mean a french bulldog 😂 who’s snoring so loud on my bed I can’t bloody sleep

there are also some fab FB pages for slipped disk / iivvd issues for frenchies

User198724 · 25/12/2022 23:31

Are there ticks where you live? We have paralyses ticks that cause similar symptoms, if you are in a tick prone area I would have a search to make sure he hasn’t got any on him and if he has remove them as soon as possible

Tropicaliyes · 25/12/2022 23:45

You know a few months back our Labradoodle was having pain in his legs, he was struggling to get up and sit down from his bed and as the day went on he started yelping while trying to stand/sit. He is about 4/5 years old and very energetic, nothing stops him and has never had anything wrong with him so this was something I noticed right away.

I couldn’t figure out if it was a front paw or back legs so I checked him, asked him for both his paws which he really struggled with which wasn’t usual and also checked his back legs and rotated each but overall he seemed fine and nothing that screamed out, no swelling, no lumps, no laboured breathing or panting but the odd yelp here and there but not for a particular limb.

I decided since it wasn’t usual I was going to call PDSA who could offer an emergency appointment if deemed necessary. I got a call back from a nurse who decided we needed to come down right away.

You never guess what! We called a cab (which wasn’t cheap) and drove down there and as soon as we got there he had no issue jumping out the car and pulling us to sniff around. He sat down without complaints and excitedly went after other actually sick dogs in the waiting room! We couldn’t believe it! A few hrs before he was at home, with doggy depression and giving us signs he was in pain… even limped a few times!

He was weighed, called in, had limb and spine check, temperature and I even asked for extra checks since we had come this far already! He was off his food and seemed very uncomfortable before. We was told there didn’t seem to be anything outwardly wrong with him but they will give him some pain killers and anti inflammatorys. All in all it cost a little over £100 to get him checked and meds and we took him home (they gave him an injection while there so we only needed to give him one med that night).

He literally never showed signs of any discomfort from the point we left for the vet! The next day I contemplated giving him his meds as I was starting to believe he was messing us around! I gave him one med and left it there. He was absolutely fine! No pain, no inflammation and no complaints since! Doggy depression gone, appetite back and energy levels bouncing off the walls! For him it was a fun day out and he loved every moment of it, us not so much and had he not of been a hypochondriac he could have just gone out as usual which would have been free but he was adamant he had “issues” that needed treatment🧐.

I have decided now if he has anything come up again I will assess the situation longer than that time! He is an otherwise healthy dog that is very attention seeking! I think it might be in his breed though as I read of a Labrador developing a fake limp just to be taken to the vets and find it’s actually fine but attention seeking! I wish we could determine that before the vet as with two cabs and the treatment and appointment we spent just under £200 for nothing! Only thing I was happy about was that I didn’t ignore it and it turn out to be something serious!

Hopefully your little one is okay, unlike ours your one sounds like they are not faking🙄 and I’m hoping the vet can give you a resolve soon. Our dogs meds could have actually gone to a sick dog that needed them🤦🏽‍♀️

Salome61 · 25/12/2022 23:47

I hope the vet rings you soon and invites you in - after reading you heard a snap it sounds like his cruciate has gone. It's like two elasticky muscles that hold the knee in place. Best wishes for him getting speedy help and his recovery.

allboysherebutme · 25/12/2022 23:56

Bless. Keep us posted. X

julesover40 · 26/12/2022 07:44

How is your dig this morning? I hope you got to see/speak to a vet x

Eightiesgirl · 26/12/2022 14:49
