Recycling….

Right I’m curious as within our area the local authority states cellotape must be removed from wrapping paper before placing in the paper bin (we have card board, plastics, paper, food, glass and general waste all separated.

Does anyone else remove the tape from wrapping paper before putting the paper in the recycling?

YABU - I am super sad and need to get a life being totally unreasonable for removing rape from wrapping paper

YANBU - seems perfectly normal etc

I am aware I am probably a sad individual but at the same time I just want to do my part for the environment with recycling and I feel we as parents need to do as much as physically possible regardless of effort involved for our children.

I don't think wrapping paper is recyclable is it? Unless it's plain brown paper. The glossy coloured stuff isn't anyway

SJT89 · 25/12/2022 22:15

@SnackSizeRaisin our bin men leave behind things that can’t be recycled and they always take ours. I never put in any shiny ones only the plain type with pictures, coloured etc. Anything shiny or glittery is refused.

I took tape off just in case.
A few weeks ago at recycling center I was going to put one of my kids poster painted, glittered, glued, pom-pom'd etc etc creation in the general waste and the guy saw me and said nah, just chuck it in the cardboard recycling. I still feel guilty I let him take it off me!

I buy paper tape that can be recycled and brown paper, I’m trying to make a conscious effort to reduce the amount of single use plastic. It has the added advantage it can also be home composted.

Most supermarket paper is recyclable.

We took the tape off.

I also use paper based tape now, but certainly ours take it with tape on. General (not local specific) guidance when I looked a couple of years ago was non foiled paper (obvs) and if it had the usual amount of tape on it was fine as is. Same with cardboard boxes if they have real tape on. It comes off during their usual recycling processes.
But then I know people who have a handful of different crates to store and sort into and have to split all types of recycling because their local recycling plant is presumably not as high tech as ours (all in 1 recycling wheelie bin and sorted there). So it's possible local authorities impose more restrictions?

Our council has said that all wrapping paper needs to go in black bag waste. I bought stuff that said it was recyclable so I’m a bit disappointed.

FrenchCarolHelp · 25/12/2022 22:33

I spent 6 bastard hours yesterday struggling with eco wrapping paper (and failing with eco sellotape) I hated the miserable look of brown paper so I will make the effort to remove the tape.
Next year I will have beautiful paper and no recycling and you can all spank me.

SJT89 · 25/12/2022 22:33

Oh my goodness! I’ve just realised autocorrect has changed ‘tape’ to ‘rape’ in my original post! I apologise if it causes any offence but I cannot change it.

Oh good! I’m not the only one! I use as little tape as possible when wrapping it’s more gifts from relatives for the children which makes me insane with the amount they use!!

We are planning on going paper tape next year but we had some left over so used it up this year.

I just checked and our council definitely takes ‘Wrapping paper (no foil nor glitter)’.

It does annoy me when our council provides bags which stay wet for days for plastic and cardboard (boxes for everything else) and refuse to take if wet so if the cardboard bag gets put out when it’s raining then they refuse to take it which in turn adds to our weekly single bag allowance of general waste.

All our recycled waste goes in a single bin, they don't make many stipulations therefore I suspect they remove glass/metal then burn the rest (using the heat for a purpose therefore 'recycling').

Id much rather have a council like yours, the more specific they are the more likely it is to be genuinely recycled. So YANBU, you're being responsible.
