To drive into London on Boxing Day

LaLiLu1 · 25/12/2022 22:04

We have been given tickets to see a show in the West End tomorrow evening (so Boxing Day). I have just realised that there are no trains running into London. Would it be unreasonable to think that it should be ok to drive in? I have never done this before, but imagine there would not be the same amount of traffic as normal? If driving is ok, where would you park?

Alternatively, can anyone recommend public transport that is running tomorrow with a car park where we could safely leave and collect the car tomorrow evening, near Dartford, Bromley or generally south east inside or outside the M25? I would be so grateful for any advice!

We usually drive in to London if we go to see a show as a family as there are 5 of us and it's cheaper and more convenient than the train. I use justpark to find parking spaces.

Often park at the national theatre (via justpark) and walk across Waterloo bridge to the west end.
Went yesterday and got a space in a random church carpark just south of Euston and walked down to our show.
If you are at all unsure about driving, check out the route on Google maps street view before you go so you know where you're going.

Thank you xyzandabc, that's reassuring. I will have a look at justpark.

Yeah we often drive in and evenings/weekends/bank hols etc and there is usually loads of on street parking available too. We went to Ronnie Scott’s last year over Christmas and parked 2 mins away. Traffic will be quiet.

check TFL website, you could drive to lewisham if DLR and tube are running? Otherwise check your car is ULEZ compliant if you’re going central

underneaththeash · 25/12/2022 22:19

It will be fine on Boxing Day.

LaLiLu1 · 25/12/2022 22:22

Thanks everyone for getting back to me so quickly, that's very reassuring. Thanks also for the tip about ULEZ compliance. I have just checked and our car is fine.

Off to bed now, so won't be responding to any other replies until tomorrow, but appreciate all the advice.

I think crossrail is running. You can park at abbeywood and take that

We drove in on Christmas Eve to see a show and it was super quiet on the roads, found a parking space easily, same on the way back. Usually would take us one hour but took 40 mins.

jaundicedoutlook · 25/12/2022 22:44

I’d go to Canary Wharf. Nice big car park underground and it’s undercover to the tube.

whatdoidonowffs · 25/12/2022 22:56

I was in central London today (think tower bridge to Marble Arch ) it was as busy as any usual day don’t imagine it will be less busy tomorrow

Meredusoleil · 25/12/2022 23:01

Don't forget the congestion charge will still be payable too!

Sorry. Ignore this message. The CC is suspended between Christmas and New Year!

Just in case OP returns (hope you’re sleeping well @LaLiLu1 )
•don’t count on any public transport tomorrow, trains on strike and buses very limited service on Boxing Day
•no congestion charge
•it’s a bank holiday so most street parking is unrestricted, check but you there’s really no need to use a private car park

Park at the O2, North Greenwich tube carpark, not the main O2 carparks. It's £12.50 for the day (as long as you park before 7pm - it goes up in the evening for O2 events) You can stay as late as you want though. North Greenwich Station, 5 Millenium Way, London, SE10 0PH
Tube right there straight into London. Easy 😊

We went to London yesterday too, and could not believe how busy it was! Around Big Ben/westminister bridge was crazy, I was surprised by how busy it was. Got stuck in bad traffic coming back along the river.

LaLiLu1 · 26/12/2022 12:02

Thank you all, we are heading off now. Will be using the parking app and expecting it to be busy, based on ppl's experience yesterday. Really appreciate all the advice.
