Sensible advice please - unwell and not sure what to do

I've woken up feeling awful - sore throat, sore mouth, blocked nose, horrible productive chesty cough, sore chest (from coughing) and bad fatigue. Normally I'd just treat it as a viral bug but I've had a couple of moments with palpitations (where I'm really aware of my heartbeat.) I am feeling pretty dry at the moment so sipping water.

Pulse and o2 is fine per my monitor but it's freaking me out. On hold to 111 currently but I'm not sure if I should just head through to the local walk in.

I do have some health anxiety and I'm not sure how much that's playing into this!

Thank you!

Not sure what you're on about, the bloods were booked in three months ago to recheck my iron levels because I'm anemic and on iron tablets!

@MakeMineALarge1 did you see this?

So you went 3 month's ago as well?

Is that okay with you? If it's I blame my GP because she booked it!

How often do you go to the GP

Thymely · 28/12/2022 21:31

QuestionableMouse · 25/12/2022 09:22

Nope. I'm on my own in a new flat unfortunately!

Already taken paracetamol and ibuprofen (since 4am or so) and they've done nothing unfortunately.

Was meant to be going to my parents but honestly I barely have the energy to get out of bed!

You're the only one who knows how bad you are compared to normal, people on here don't. If you think you are really bad do what is necessary you are alone and if you really get worse there is no there to one to help.

Northernsoullover · 28/12/2022 21:32

Holy fuck there are some nasty people on this thread. I have health anxiety. Caused by suffering with pneumonia which my doctor wouldn't test for. I'd been ill for a month. People with health anxiety do actually get ill sometimes you know? I manage my HA well now but not everyone is at that stage. Calling OP a drama queen is cuntish behaviour. Are you people always this horrible to people suffering with MH conditions?

I've been twice in the last year, both for anemia. Though once was to see the GP and once the nurse.

Before that I was there once last year, for an ear infection.

Before that, I can't remember but not often at all.

Though to he honest, I'm not sure it's any of your business but you seem to have the idea in your head that I'm there every five minutes and it's just not true.

The fact you were asking for sensible advice on the first day you felt ill indicated you knew you were being ott

Blahburst · 28/12/2022 21:36

@MakeMineALarge1 your tone to the OP is disgusting. Leave her alone you bully.

No like everyone else we were giving sensible advice

Ginsloth · 28/12/2022 21:37

Is there a reason why you have a monitor for your pulse and oxygen saturations? If you have no underlying physical health problems this is completely unnecessary.
Kindly, I think once you feel better and are over your chest infection, you should see your GP regarding your anxiety.

Bullying is a term that is thrown very easily
Disagreement and offering an alternative pov isn't bullying.

So you went 3 month's ago as well?

Yeah...routine bloods. Its common. I have to get mine checked every month for the next 6 months not for shits and giggles.

Valhalla17 · 28/12/2022 21:40

Camp up in your bed or on the sofa OP. Blanket/duvet, tissues, warm drinks and chappy snacks if you can face them. Put something on the telly and relax. The palpitations may be the anaemia actually and I had them some months ago, so understand it can feel frightening. Just try to rest and and when you've recovered get back to the GP to sort your iron out. An infusion did the job for me.

LapinR0se · 28/12/2022 21:40

I have these symptoms, went to outpatients at our local hospital (in Ireland) yesterday and it is bronchitis. I’ve got antibiotics and an inhaler. I wouldn’t leave it if I were you

Valhalla17 · 28/12/2022 21:40

Crappy snacks*🙄

Yes I know routine bloods are common for many a reason
If the OP knew she had an appointment coming up, why the need to post for advice?
Having a sats probe if you can't interpret the information is just foolhardy

Because they felt unwell and presumably didn't know if it could wait or not.

jamsandwich1 · 28/12/2022 21:46

Personally, I’d just rest and wait it out. None of us can say what it is or if it’s serious but it sounds very viral.

jevoudrais · 28/12/2022 21:49

Glad you're doing OK @QuestionableMouse I think people were unnecessarily harsh.

My brother had felt like he had food poisoning for a couple of days and became breathless one morning. He rang 111 and passed out during the phone call. They triaged him as a Cat 1 (highest priority) and got to him in under 10 minutes. Paramedics couldn't get an answer at the door but looked through the letterbox and saw him gravely unwell. They broke in and he went into cardiac arrest when they got to him. After 45 minutes of CPR they stopped and he was pronounced dead. He was 31.

I know people will say this is rare, but if you are worried, please, please go and get checked out. I know my brother will have told himself he would be fine and not to make a fuss until he absolutely had to, but for some people, that really is too late.

NosyNeighbour22 · 28/12/2022 21:50

I’m prone to palpitations and I always get them when I’m unwell. It’s not anything to worry about! Read the NHS website advice on palpitations and see what you think after that.

Why do you think I can't understand what a pulse ox says? I can actually, because I spent months last year nursing my mum after she came out of ICU and was released home.

Can you just give it a rest please? You've got such a weird set of ideas about me and bth, it's a bit uncomfortable reading it.

I suffer with health anxiety so I totally get it. To hopefully reassure you a little.Anemia can cause palpitations and ectopic beats so can being ill and so can anxiety. Palpitations and ectopic beats are actually really normal and common and aren't dangerous. I had a 24hr ecg and had 864 ectopic beats and the cardiologist told me that's fine it's only of concern if there in the thousands a day. My anxiety is also 10xs worse when anemic so that's probably not helping matters. Just try and get lots of rest and hopefully the antibiotics soon start working and you feel better soon. I also have an oximeter and it actually really helps my anxiety so don't listen to other commenters who clearly don't understand

It doesn't take a trained professional to use an oximeter there very basic. Ideal oxygen levels in a healthy person should be between 95% to 100% and ideal heart rate should be between 50 and 90 bpm at rest however everyone is different and you soon learn what is normal for you. And I figured that out without going to medical school 🙄

nothingleftttt · 28/12/2022 22:20

@Northernsoullover
Agreed.
I have health anxiety in relation to my children and it was kick started by GP missing a major condition in my child. I was made to feel like a anxious mum but my gut feeling was right.
I now struggle as they missed the signs so many times when the child was young that now I find it hard to know if something else has been missed.

Seriously? I listened to a Dr on Radio 4 Today in the early days of the pandemic who said everyone should have an oximeter in their home.

So I bought one and I keep it with our digital thermometer and blood pressure monitor (bought on the advice of Dr when they couldn't see me during covid and wanted my blood pressure measurements)

I don't have health anxiety but frankly if I did these things would reassure me!
