To expect Asda to replace or exchange my Durabrand Microwave

Following reports of an electrical fault with the brand that I have?

See statement from Asda

Here

The machine that I have is exactly the same as the one there is an issue with, the only difference apparently being that I bought it a few months prior to the model number they have quoted being brought out.

It's the same price and was in the same box.

It doesn't however share the same model number. When I called the store to ask what I should do, 2 operators who assumed my model number matched told me I couldn't exchange without box and receipt so clearly haven't read the Asda statement.

In the end I had to speak to a total of 4 people, when I asked to speak to the Manager, the Personnel Manager came on the line as there was no other Manager on duty.

I probably AM being unreasonable, but I have no confidence in this particular make of microwave- it was only cheap and I only use once of twice a week- but it's been unplugged ever since as I've got no confidence in it's safety

Their Head Office have just told me it's at the store's discretion.....

Have they actually said you can't have a refund/exchange?

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 03/02/2008 12:36

Yes because 'I need to wait until an electrical fault occurs'

If the store have said no, then I'd been inclined to either

a) take it to another asda, complain about a fault (maybe similar to the one reported) and ask for refund/exchange

or

b) write to HO and explain your concern at its safety

kayzr · 03/02/2008 12:37

Great. So when it sets on fire they'll give you your money back
Sorry its a bit OTT

runnyhabbit · 03/02/2008 12:37

I do think its out of order that HO have said its up to the stores discretion. That is totally passing the buck

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 03/02/2008 12:39

I think they have behaved appallingly and am really hacked off tbh but not sure if I am overreacting or not

I don't think you're over-reacting.

I used to work in sales, and tbh, if there's not actually anything wrong with the product, and "its fit for purpose" the store doesn't have to refund/exchange. (Probably not what you wanted here)

runnyhabbit · 03/02/2008 12:43

hear

bitofadramaqueen · 03/02/2008 12:44

I do think its rubbish that your call was handled so badly. I would be really p'd off to ring up with a legitimate concern/query about the safety of a product and be passed around without anyone really dealing with it properly. I would agree that you could write to their HO to outline your concerns about the safety of your model.

However, that said the statement suggests to me that a particular model has been recalled because of the complaints of overheating. If you dont have that model then there isn't any reason for the store to return yours.

Even if it looks the same if it his a different model number then the internal components could be different/work differently.

bitofadramaqueen · 03/02/2008 12:45

has not his

kayzr · 03/02/2008 12:47

I've just seen the news and in the statement on there from Asda it said anybody with one of those microwaves can get it changed as they dont use Batch codes!
I'm confused now

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 03/02/2008 14:06

Oh really- on what news did you see that?

That could be very useful-thanks!

OP posts:
kayzr · 03/02/2008 15:45

It was sky news.

wildfish · 03/02/2008 16:22

I think you are, they've recalled a specific model . You have a different model, different model normally means something has changed somewhere (might be parts, components or anything). It might look the same, same box, but doesn't mean there is the same fault. As for the wait for a fault, I understood that to mean, we are not recalling yours, but if you have a fault you can return it. (not the overheating fault)

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 03/02/2008 17:05

Well I went into the store where they apologised and gave me a full refund.

The staff in store had not read or seen the statements made by head office.

I do take your point, but my machine was the same as the faulty ones- it's a few months older hence the different model number. Apparently the only thing that has changed is the door opening mechanism so they are contacting their HO to advise them of this. The fault is with the timer not operating properly- BBC news stated that the 'Asda had recalled the entire range'and not just that particular model. Shame they hadn't seen fit to properly inform their staff.....

Thanks for all your responses!
