Christmas Cards

We stopped sending cards a few years back and let everybody know.

We've only had about six cards this year. They look very lonely on the fire place!

I still send them, but we haven't received a huge number either. I wonder whether any late ones will arrive. It all does seem a bit of a faff / expensive / not great environmentally, but it's still odd too see card giving reduce so much.

Merry Christmas 🙂.

lionhead1 · 25/12/2022 05:23

Same here they're so expensive! Seemed such a waste. We've only sent v close family this year and have had maybe 7 back. Merry Christmas 🎄

hattie43 · 25/12/2022 05:52

I think cards are being slowly faded out in favour of a fb / WhatsApp greeting . That coupled with known postal strikes mean we haven't received or sent as many

Sugarfree23 · 25/12/2022 06:01

What do you mean they look lonely?

You are actually lucky to have got any, you decided to stop sending, others are following your lead.

Yes I am sad enough to note who has stopped sending. If you can't be bothered why should others?

autienotnaughty · 25/12/2022 06:24

With immediate family we do nice thoughtful cards. I alway buy a pack to send to relatives we never see too. And have a few spare to send if people don't send to me.

Mistletoeandwinee · 25/12/2022 06:24

I actually only started sending Xmas cards in 2020 after years of not bothering. I found it really helped me connect with family and friends - even if it is just once a year! I like putting in the effort and I think most people appreciate it, particularly older relatives. I find it therapeutic writing and sending the cards and I never expect one back. I also make sure I buy charity eco friendly cards. I get quite a lot of cards as a teacher from my students so I always have quite a few up in my house.

123woop · 25/12/2022 06:47

I always make the effort with cards. I send about 100 and I worked out that this year it's only cost me £10 in total. Had lots of messages from people saying how much it meant to them that I still thought of them, especially at Xmas time, and that to me made it all worthwhile. However we've had about 50 cards back so far and now my house looks like card factory 🤣

greenteafiend · 25/12/2022 06:49

I send cards with handwritten letters to the people I see only rarely, as people do tend to read handwritten letters and it is a nice way to keep a friendship connection going. I don't "get" giving cards to people you see all the time, and especially to people living in the same house as you--it's an odd thing to do.

fancyacuppatea · 25/12/2022 06:52

Sent 11 and received 7 up to yesterday.

Not sending more than 7 next year.

KimberleyClark · 25/12/2022 06:57

Re giving cards to people living in the same house as you - DH and I give each other cards. Wouldn’t consider not doing so, in the same way I wouldn’t consider not getting him a birthday or wedding anniversary card.

It does tickle me that those who announce on FB that they’re not sending cards this year but giving a donation to charity instead, never ask for cards not to be sent to them.

Twiglets1 · 25/12/2022 07:01

So? What did you expect?
Ive noticed fewer people sending cards this Year including 2 friends at work who only told me they weren’t “doing “ cards this year as I handed them my cards. I won’t be giving them a card next year.

cantsing · 25/12/2022 07:10

What's the AIBU?

This is what you wanted.

Ifailed · 25/12/2022 07:12

I expect they'll die out completely within the next 10-15 years. Rather like telegrams.

hotelparadiso · 25/12/2022 07:15

I don't send them and I don't expect them. I always get one from my best friend because they like sending them but they know they won't be getting one from me because I don't do them

This year the one from my bestie is the only one I got - it has pride of place in the middle of the mantlePiece

Pterrydactyl · 25/12/2022 07:16

Postal strikes may have had an impact this year. We haven’t had cards from a number of people who usually send them.

But also, some people stop sending cards to people who don’t send them any.

ClarathecrosseyedLioness · 25/12/2022 07:17

A lot of our family don't send cards, they donate to a charity instead.

Hi, I’m curious how sending 100 cards cost you only £10😮

Ohyoudodoyou · 25/12/2022 07:26

We get a nice number every year but then I send and hand out a fair number of cards.
The post arrived the other day and there was a really big bundle of Christmas cards due to the postal delays.
I was quite excited, it was like the '90's again!

speakout · 25/12/2022 07:30

I have recieved aroung 50 cards this year.
Half handed to me and half have been posted.
Seems most of the people I know love christmas cards.
Mostly all unusual images because of my beliefs, some I keep and frame, the others I make into labels for presents, punch a hole and add string.

I was wondering the same - postage alone would have cost £68 at least?

OrigamiOwls · 25/12/2022 07:48

So you haven't sent cards and you're unhappy only a few people have sent you cards? If you stop sending cards surely that's a signal that you don't expect to receive cards either?

Swissnotswiss · 25/12/2022 08:09

I sent 15 and received 2!

Beebumble2 · 25/12/2022 08:12

I like sending cards, it seems a more personal greeting than a text. I buy cards that I really like rather than charity cards ( but could be both) and then donate money to a local charity where I know they get 100%.

Divebar2021 · 25/12/2022 08:17

They won’t die out …. People have been saying that about books and records for years. People like me will continue to make them and send them along with letters and at some point people will figure out they’re nicer than a text message and they’ll have a little revival.

I agree.
I think we will see a revival in cards.
They may be old hat right now, but people will come again to enjoy them.

People like vinyl again- thought we had seen the last.
