Anyone up? DH is ill and I'm not sure what I should do

We've all been ill for the last week but he just hasn't got better. Even our T1 Diabetic son has bounced back.

Since Monday dh has been in bed with a cough, temperature, vomiting and diarrhoea. He just went to the toilet and fainted and fell off it.

I am waiting on for 111 but he is adamant he will be fine.

I am worried that he needs antibiotics. I did try to get him to call our GP one day this week and now wish I'd just done it for him.

I wondered about dropping him into A&E but I would need to leave him there as we have kids at home.

Please tell me to stop worrying and go back to bed or to get firm and drive him in.

60-100 beats per min is normal. If he’s above 100 whilst sitting I’d call for urgent help.

shockthemonkey · 25/12/2022 10:19

OP I’m like your husband, had the same fainting after five days of medic avoidance and turns out I was very ill indeed. Symptoms a bit like your DH. So I’m glad you’re keeping a watchful eye. Take care and hope it gets sorted

Grapewrath · 25/12/2022 10:26

My friend has similar flu like symptoms which weren’t improving and had pneumonia. I hope you get some advice soon and he’s ok

nottodaytomorrow · 25/12/2022 10:32

Probably dehydrated due to consistent loss of fluid. I would b seeking medical advice purely incase he needs a drip to replace salts etc

Twinklenoseblows · 25/12/2022 10:44

Any luck with 111? What's his temp? Does it come down with paracetamol?

anyolddinosaur · 25/12/2022 11:16

NAD so would never tell you not to take medical advice. I would be doing what you have been doing - monitoring carefully. Not clear why he is drinking so I'd be making up rehydration fluid

One litre of water
6 level teaspoons sugar
1/2 level teaspoon salt

and seeing if I could get any of that into him. Ask him to leave pee in the toilet -if dark orange then needs more liquid, red or brown would have me thinking a&e.

workiskillingme · 25/12/2022 14:08

How is he doing ?

SeenAndNot · 25/12/2022 20:06

How’s he doing OP?

Cococomelon · 25/12/2022 20:51

I don't think it's that unusual to pas out if yours unwell and have D&V. I say it's not unusual but all I know is it's happened to me a few times and a GP told me it's not I unusual so it's not necessarily a sign of something serious but I hope you managed to get through to 111.

HeatAndEat · 26/12/2022 20:39

@Minimalme how are things now?

Minimalme · 26/12/2022 21:53

Thanks for asking! We are not much further on.

I rang 111 this morning and waited for two hours to get through. They said a Doctor would ring within two hours, but that was 8 hours ago.

He is still unwell and coughing up green stuff.

He might still survive the night, as he did say he's feeling a bit better this evening.

He has been mainly in bed for 8 days now.

On a really selfish level I am heartily sick of being the only person doing stuff in the house.

The whole system is stretched to breaking. It's a bit scary.

Fingers crossed he gets better or you get some help soon @Minimalme.

Keep us in the loop when you can

ArcticSkewer · 27/12/2022 02:59

sounds like he needs antibiotics - hope you get through to a doctor soon.
If you can afford it, there are private online GP consults who can prescribe

Minimalme · 27/12/2022 12:35

Massive relief - out of hours Doctor rang this morning (all in 24 hours from 111 call).

I told dh if he told the GP he was feeling better, I would kill him before the illness did.

GP thinks he has pneumonia (apparently stomach upset, fever and lack of improvement are all symptoms) and he has been prescribed antibiotics.

Such a massive relief. I could feel the crackle in his chest just by placing my hand on him.

He is generally a stubborn bugger but he has excelled himself this time. I've told him next time he is ill I will make the decisions, because he can't be trusted.

Anyway, thanks so much for all the advice and support. Happy New Year to you all, you lovely people.

so glad youve got medical help .Happy new year xx

MissMaple82

I was prescribed antibiotics for gastroenteritis, that was severe D&V!

Yes, salmonella and listeria are bacterial. Giardia is a protozoan and may require an anti parasitic.

shockthemonkey · 27/12/2022 14:35

Great to hear. I did comment earlier as it sounded like my pneumonia and I ended up in hospital ten days. You did well to avoid that!

workiskillingme · 27/12/2022 15:36

Very poor practice to suspect pneumonia without even clapping eyes on the patient
Sad times that this is the norm

HappyHolidays22 · 27/12/2022 17:46

What has the health service come to when it takes so long to receive care! Hoping your DH starts to improve after he has had a few doses of antibiotics. Best wishes for the New Year xxx
