What is Xmas about for you?

I did not grow up with Xmas, in fact I did not really grow up with any religious festivals. Now that we have kids, I am just not sure how/what Xmas is about for us as a family. What is it about for you? Family, faith, tradition? And how do you make it meaningful for you if you didn't grow up with it but also have no other faith that takes precedence?

We're Catholic, so mostly it's about the birth of Jesus.

The three year old would say it's about chocolate and surprise eggs, however...

BluesandReds · 25/12/2022 04:36

It's just another day, it has no meaning for me at all.

I think because I have no family apart from Dh. So maybe it's about people?

I don't have people in my life so Christmas doesn't really exist in any way.

BluesandReds · 25/12/2022 04:38

I do have my sister but she's abroad with her partner, and close friends all moved away for work or partners.

I need to find a new circle but it's hard as an adult!

Ponderingwindow · 25/12/2022 05:25

it’s about having a celebration of light and abundance in the darkness of winter.

hattie43 · 25/12/2022 05:40

Stopping the world for a couple of days . Time indulgence, no clock watching ,no having to be somewhere. Time to do leisure activities without guilt . Obviously family , food , movies but am hoping for dry weather for nice dog walks aswell . Also the Kings speech this year and a local Carol service .

I have lovely memories of Christmas growing up.
I am spiritual, non religious, so embody the spirit of xmas all year round, grattitude, kindness, compassion etc, for me it in not restricted to just one day. I am lucky that l have a close loving relationship with my family, we often meet up, cook for more another and go on long hikes, today will be no different in that respect.

Family.
And food.

Coasterfan · 25/12/2022 06:51

Family time and two weeks off work! Before and after Christmas Day catching up with extended family and friends, so for us it’s all about people and festive days out!

Stuffin · 25/12/2022 06:52

A break from working.

fancyacuppatea · 25/12/2022 06:53

Boredom.

ThreeblackCats · 25/12/2022 06:55

I’m an atheist. I enjoy Christmas for family time, feasting and relaxing. I love that our small street has the majority of house decorated and illuminated, it really does bring me cheer when the nights are so long.
The highlight of the food is obviously Christmas lunch then the constant grazing.

I give no thought to the religious aspects but I do have a nativity scene and I like putting it up as it’s so cute.

have a wonderful Christmas everyone.

Philandbill · 25/12/2022 06:59

Faith for me, we'll be at church later celebrating the birth of Jesus.
And of course it is a family time too as we gather with our extended family and have time together.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day today, in whatever way you are spending it. And a big thank you to all essential workers who are or will be working today.

Toptopsy · 25/12/2022 08:34

Interesting to hear how much it's about family and food for people.

Exactly that, and in that order too!

Happy Christmas OP Xmas Smile

Bestcatmum · 25/12/2022 09:19

I don't celebrate christmas at all, I'm a pagan. I celebrate the winter Solstice with like minded friends.
I can't help feeling the first christians would turn in their graves to see what a festival of greed it has become.

Food

This. Lovely watching the DC opening their presents but the highlight of my day is cooking our Christmas dinner and all sitting together to eat it.

loridee · 25/12/2022 09:24

Spending time with my family. The excitement of the day. Food.

twinkletwinkle007 · 25/12/2022 10:28

Peaceful and restful time
Family time
Special food
Presents for kids
Christmas songs and lights

It struck me this year how much people are stressed during this time, how frustrated they are. Endless queues in the shops just before Christmas, horrendous traffic, and the priority for Christmas is buying. It's sad.

CheapFoodShits · 25/12/2022 11:12

Food, family and fun.

Tinsella · 25/12/2022 11:21

It’s a midwinter feast / celebration for us.
I love the food, lights, presents for the kids, time off work, opportunity to see family & friends.

I’m not a Christian, so religion has never come into it for me.

Lansonmaid · 25/12/2022 11:53

Family and faith. I'm a church chorister so it's very busy for us. And I love just relaxing when the services are over and I can spend time with the family enjoying the food and playing silly board games.

IncompleteSenten · 25/12/2022 11:54

Cheerful decorations, nice food and drink and just relaxing with family and having fun.
