Letting my Dd, 4 try Baileys

Christmassongsonaloop · 24/12/2022 23:42

I was in the kitchen earlier, Dh had opened the Baileys and taken in a small glass. I was getting dinner ready and heard Dd,4, asking what it was, he said it was like coffee but alcohol and only grown ups were allowed..ok fair enough.
I finished washing up, then heard Dd saying she didn’t want to try any, I shouted into the living room ‘Try what?’ and she said ‘Daddy’s drink’ so I said that no she mustn’t drink that, Dh said it was only a bit on his finger for her to see
Why? What’s the point, she didn’t want any, but he would have given her some 🤷🏻‍♀️
Aibu to feel pissed off about it

I give my 3 yo a tsp of brandy for bad coughs. 👀

Despite alcohol being toxic and a 3-year-old having a tiny liver! Why would you do something so irresponsible?

I have fond memories of getting "dippy doos" of various alcohols from a young age, especially my Nanna's sherry. I think as a child it satisfies a curiosity, and makes you feel like you are joining in with the adults, in a very innocent way that still seems exciting at the time. It's not like you can get drunk that way, or damage your body or mind (probably less damaging than a bag of Haribo tbh).

Did you know too, that lots of foods contain trace amounts of alcohol, for example banana? Which lots of infants are weaned on, to no ill effect. Don't let in spoil your Christmas.

When I was 10 I pestered dm about her cigarette.
She told me I could try it and I had to put it in my mouth and suck as hard as I could.
My eyes stang and my throat was burning and I coughed violently.
And most importantly I never smoked because dm successfully put me off for life.

YANBU, totally unnecessary and weird behaviour in your DH part.

my MIL and FIL kept doing this with my 1 year old last year. I was really annoyed about it as they deliberately did it when I wasn't in the room. They say things like oh she's a bit uptight etc but my mum was an alcoholic so maybe it's triggering for me but I don't see what anyone would gain from giving a baby, 4 yr old, 10 yr old or any child for that matter alcohol

Bloody hell

RLOU30 · 25/12/2022 01:35

Why? I mean my 4YO has had some lengthy spells of extreme coughing but not once have I thought to crack open the brandy…

BlueDragon1 · 25/12/2022 01:43

This is why you don’t give alcohol to a child. For all you people who think its ok think on.

I think there is a middle ground in something being a great idea and 'omg I need a divorce' (not saying the op has said this)

What does it do? Does it help them sleep mainly?

DrunkOnHim · 25/12/2022 02:29

Its unlikely to have negatively affected her but it’s just a weird thing to do. My parents and in laws have both tried to do this with alcohol to my kids when they were really young. It’s immature and pointless. I think anyone trying to justify it is a bit of a twat really. I couldn’t deal with having someone that did things like that as a partner.

FTY765 · 25/12/2022 04:03

I wouldn't like it either.
Something about it does not sit right.

Carrick27 · 25/12/2022 05:51

Not that many years ago babies gripe water contained alcohol!
I’m not an advocate of giving children alcohol but a little taste isn’t going to be harmful.
