£10 gift voucher from work for Xmas…AIBU to think they shouldn’t have bothered?

So yesterday I get home from a long fourteen hour shift working in a care home to find a gift voucher in the mail. The gift voucher is from my work, one of the biggest care providers in the country, for the generous sum of £10. I can’t help but feel a tiny bit disgruntled about this. I mean, I would have preferred a pay rise in line with inflation to have tackle the rapid cost of living crisis that we find ourselves in but I suppose this shall do. Merry Christmas

Christmas gift is a separate issue to pay and conditions.

so YABU it’s a nice token of appreciation.
I work in health and got nothing

Have you considered another job?

Yes one less carer is the way forward!

Working for a smallish private firm we were spoiled at Christmas. We also got little perks throughout the year. Some employers genuinely appreciate their team. I'm suprised some posters hold the bar so low!

You are definitely not ungrateful OP. My mum has worked in care for 30+ years (her 3rd Christmas in a row) and it is such a thankless job. She didn't receive anything, not even a card (neither did I but I work in a completely different industry and earn a lot more). Carers should absolutely be paid a better wage for the hard work they do, but it's been this way for many years now and I have no idea what the answer is. It amazes me when people tell carers to just change jobs, as what would happen if all carers took this attitude and just left the industry?! If it's any consolation, I'm sure the residents and their families appreciate everything you do for them. I know this is what keeps my mum going as they tell my mum all the time how wonderful she is. I hope you have a lovely Christmas OP x

I'm with you OP. I'd prefer nothing that confirmation of how little I'm valued.

Just askingdoesnthe company you work for begin with a D at all as sounds like company I work for to did that

TheChosenTwo · 24/12/2022 23:29

I got a generic email from my boss thanking us for sticking through a Rocky year and to buckle up for a rockier one to come. Festive.
And still, I think a £10 voucher is a bit of an insult. I prefer the crap doom and gloom email.

Yes it's crap and it would be better to get nothing. Not quite as crap as the year, when I was an NHS midwife, that the ward manager confiscated boxes of chocolates from the office that patients had given as thank you gifts, and divided them into sandwich bags to give to every staff member. Imagine about 5 Quality Street as your work Xmas gift.

Member869894 · 24/12/2022 23:48

It's really tight. I don't blame you for being pissed off

milkysmum · 24/12/2022 23:56

It's a Christmas gift. I think £10 for each employee is pretty decent to be honest. I'm an NHS nurse and we certainly wouldn't get that ( I got a small Christmas box with with a couple of sweets in, as in about 6 ). I'd have been made up with a £10 voucher.

LayeringUp · 24/12/2022 23:57

Yes, it's an insult. I'd be tempted to send it back...

Bluejeantreefrog · 25/12/2022 00:42

Heard about some colleagues husbands getting hampers, meals out, vouchers every year.
I work in a very busy, often miss breaks, late off cos short staffed public sector. Been an awful year this last year. We got nothing. I'm still annoyed and feel undervalued. Won't be missing breaks next year for sure. £10 is better than nothing.

Hearmeout · 25/12/2022 00:54

I work for a reasonably large not for profit and we were given an extra day off and all sent a £25 voucher by surprise and it was lovely, I think £10 would have been nice too, just for the fact we weren't expecting anything at all.

It's a gift and if it offends you, it you can't make use of it , donate it elsewhere maybe. That way it's called increases as it becomes a gift of selflessness from you as well as a small monetary gesture. Double win.

ErinAndTonic · 25/12/2022 00:57

I got fuck all except an early finish. I'd also be grateful and see it as separate from the pay issue.

I'm not saying she should quit but if she is so pissed off with her treatment why stay? Yes her work is important but it's clearly not valued enough so why should she miss out on her own future pension and her own heating?
