To be annoyed about lack of Christmas bonus?

Vexed22 · 24/12/2022 16:57

I work in retail, small business with a handful of branches, and last year's Christmas bonus was a £20 voucher, which I was slightly miffed about as previous years had been a lot more.

This year however I have had no bonus at all. I imagine their reasoning is along the lines of belt tightening, recession etc etc BUT I know for the fact that it has been a good year saleswise, especially at the branch I work at - 100% up from the previous year, and also last week saw the boss giving an expensive Christmas gift to one of our suppliers reps.

AIBU to feel upset about this?

Is it in your contract that you will receive a bonus at Christmas? Otherwise, YABU - whatever your boss gifts to whatever supplier rep is nothing to do with you; stop trying to make comparisons.

00100001 · 24/12/2022 16:59

I have never had a Christmas Bonus.

Hbh17 · 24/12/2022 17:19

Try working in the public or voluntary sectors - you will never get a Christmas bonus!

Spaghetti201 · 24/12/2022 17:20

Geez I gave our cleaner (who comes for 2 hours per week) a £50 bonus. £20 bonus for a full time job is ridiculous.

MarshaMelrose · 24/12/2022 17:22

I have never ever received a Christmas bonus. I've worked in civil service, charity sector, international company, education. Not one bonus have I ever received.

Oysterbabe · 24/12/2022 17:22

We got a £1 selection box 😑
But I got a £500 tax rebate 🙏

Aprilx · 24/12/2022 17:23

Perhaps they want to move away from giving Christmas bonuses, it is not something that happens as standard. So yes YABU, a bonus is a bonus, something that should be seen as such.

We are a family of public sector workers - teachers, NHS, BBC etc. Granddaughter got a sponsorship for uni with a prestigious car manufacturer, and I quickly realised the perks of life in the private sector. Apart from the gifts from here, there and everywhere, a first year monetary bonus of £1000+ for a Yr 1 employee (plus they paid her uni fees, travelling and an £18,000 pa salary. Slinging money around. In teaching we got giddy if we got biscuits at a meeting.

wineandsunshine · 24/12/2022 17:30

I'm a teacher - zero bonus. Our end of term treat was tidying the cloakroom so we could 'leave early'

converseandjeans · 24/12/2022 17:33

Teacher here (secondary) and we get nothing - pay for our own Christmas do etc.

However I agree that business has done well & they are handing gifts to suppliers. So I think a token gift to staff would be a nice touch. Little things make a difference & a small token of appreciation would likely make you want to go above & beyond. A £50 voucher would probably get more work out of you the next 12 months. Instead you feel a bit pissed off.

Some people get a huge bonus so YANBU.

I have worked in multinational financial services organisation for thirty years. In a professional and pretty senior capacity. I have never had a Christmas bonus, it just isn’t a thing. And these organisation have strict rules on the acceptance of gifts, if your granddaughter is receiving gifts left right and centre she really should check there isn’t a policy prohibiting it.

MoreSleepPleasee · 24/12/2022 17:38

Yabu. We got a £20 voucher as we didn't have a work Xmas meal this year but usually we get nothing.

Angeldelight81 · 24/12/2022 17:39

I must say my first roll straight out of university. We got a £50 Christmas bonus and that kind of set the president as far as I was concerned, but I have been nothing but disappointed ever since.
This time next year, I will have 5/6 staff and every single one of them will receive a nice cash bonus.

Any amount of money would have made a difference this year with the cost of everything.

I've now found out from a colleague that he received a bonus, which just makes me feel worse.

Just because your sore is preforming doesn't mean Everyone is. Retail is tough.

FlutterbButterfly · 24/12/2022 17:41

YABU. I've never had a bonus, I've worked same place since 2002..... no Christmas party/do this year either, even if we had we have to pay for ourselves!

Company (leisure industry) was closed during the lockdowns but is doing very well for itself since.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/12/2022 17:46

Try £50 of online vouchers that enable you to buy fuck all. Considering the company made £150m profit this financial year, the exec team did a little better.

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/12/2022 17:48

@Hbh17 i work for a charity and we get a £500 Christmas bonus

achildisborn · 24/12/2022 17:48

£150 NHS!

saturnisturning · 24/12/2022 17:49

It’s the giving expensive gifts to suppliers and then ignoring the staff that have been working hard all year.

you’ll get your arse handed to you on a plate here though op and told by everyone and their granny that no one deserves a bonus 😂😂

I agree with you though on the point of the supplier gifts

Grantanow · 24/12/2022 18:08

Never got a bonus, Xmas or otherwise, when working hard in the public sector for government.

Buildingthefuture · 24/12/2022 18:14

As a business, they might well have had a high turnover, but how much of that is actually profit? Costs have risen massively this year, so profit margins have definitely fallen. Bonus comes from profit. Having said that, I have a business and I do give my staff a bonus every year (minimum 10% of their annual salary). I have done it every year (even during covid, when I really couldn’t afford it) because without them, there is no business! And, before anyone jumps on the bandwagon, no, none of them are on zero hours contracts, or minimum wage, or living wage, even the apprentices. My staff are bloody amazing and are properly paid, including a minimum 10% COL raise across the board this year. I couldn’t do it without them. It’s shit op, but maybe need to look for a better employer?

torquewench · 24/12/2022 18:41

I've never had a Christmas bonus. Worked private sector 33 years.

torquewench · 24/12/2022 18:43

And nor have any of my friends, mix of private and public sector. I've only ever seen them being given in American movies.

swashbucklecheer · 24/12/2022 18:46

What's a Christmas bonus? Never had one, never likely to get one either.
