What age did you chill out about babies and infection exposure?

We have a healthy full-term ebf 5 month old DC. Hosting my family for Xmas this year and one of them has turned up with a cough and a fever. They didn’t tell us about it beforehand but they’ve travelled several hundred miles so I don’t think we could have told them not to attend anyway. PILs live locally and are planning to join for Xmas dinner tomorrow but one of them has a cold too.

We’re out and about all the time but until now we have deliberately avoided any friends or relatives with coughs/colds etc. I know baby is going to start getting infections eventually but he still seems so young to me, I feel bad exposing him to things that will cause him pain and discomfort! And we have a week off together after Xmas which is our one chance to relax as a family before DH starts demanding new job in January, and I’m now worried we’ll spend it caring for a poorly baby. Am I being precious? At five months I just need to suck it up and accept it as part of life, right? When did everyone else chill out about these things?

yabu - with a healthy five month old you just need to crack on with it
yanbu - I would still be taking precautions at this age too

I was really protective with my first. Born just as covid started, so I was incredibly nervous and kept her away from everyone.

My second I’ve not had much choice as obviously my first is always getting illnesses and bringing them back.

Therefore - he’s had chickenpox, covid and just got through flu. He’s only 6 months! 🤣🤣

He’s been fine. He’s gonna have a formidable immune system after all this!

I've never tried to shield mine from coughs and colds. It never occurred to me to, but she was born full term and healthy. She started nursery last month and at 5 months still hasn't caught anything somehow!

It wasn’t something we avoided, and our daughter was premature, she’s one, had plenty colds, sniffles etc and she’s fine. If we kept her in a bubble we would only be delaying illness, not preventing it.

@QS90 Yes first baby and we've had a rough 2 weeks with my episiotomy getting infected and getting mastitis so I've been quite poorly and I just can't cope with DD getting a bug whilst I'm trying to heal from birth 😭. I don't think you sound OTT at all! I just know his family will think I'm being precious tomorrow if I object to my tiny baby getting passed round like a pass the parcel but the kids are always ill from nursery/ school and there's so many threads on here about all the awful colds and flu going round! If anyone is a bit snotty or coughing I'll just have to say something.

Good luck @rickandmorts , heal well and stand your ground ❤️. Thanks everyone else, this thread has calmed me down a bit 😊
