When did it become so hard to give things away ?

Having a clear out including lots of baby stuff that DGC have outgrown and DD doesn’t want . Moses basket , clothes , toys.
As money is tight for many people I decided to give it away using a local Facebook site .
Simple ? No.
Despite me asking people to collect , every person who has shown interest has asked me to deliver . A couple of people have become a bit stroppy when I said collect only . Reminder - this is good quality free stuff.
Yesterday I waited in all day for someone who didn’t appear . Today someone who said she was desperate said she would be here at 10. I told her we are going out at 12 so she has to be here before then . 10 minutes ago she messaged and said she would be here at 2 !!! I reminded her the arrangement and she said she thinks I could be a bit more understanding!
Has anyone else experienced similar ? I don’t think I am unreasonable but maybe I am ??

Same here. People are also so ungrateful. I don’t give nice things away to feel good about myself but a genuine thank you would be nice.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 24/12/2022 11:44

Have you got a drive/front garden?
Just pop the stuff outside, put a post on Facebook, and tell people it's first come first served.

Lilly11a · 24/12/2022 11:44

Just wrap it up in a bin bag and leave it out the front for her , tell her this and go about your day

MittenstheMurderKitty · 24/12/2022 11:46

We just give things away to local charity shops. Quick and easy, no angst 😁.

Giggorata · 24/12/2022 11:46

I have had this too and in the end, decided to give to charities that will distribute items to people in need, like our food bank, or a local church.

KnittedCardi · 24/12/2022 11:47

You could try Nextdoor as well, and only keep it local - I have given a lot away this way, much easier for people to pop in if they are close to you too.

fairgame84 · 24/12/2022 11:47

Never give anything away on Facebook, it's full of ungrateful cheeky fuckers.
I waited in all evening for someone who didn't turn up so I offered to the next person who asked. I got a load of abuse from the cf who didn't turn up, called a cow and a bitch. Her time is apparently more important than mine.

I would normally do that but I even charity shop prices can be beyond some people . I thought I was doing a nice thing !

This country is so bad for stuff like this. It's unbelievable.

Sometimes I think a nominal fee works better. Charity shops even better.

This is a local site

Some people genuinely think they are doing you a favour by taking your stuff.

They act accordingly.

No good deed goes unpunished!

bellac11 · 24/12/2022 11:49

I find it difficult to give stuff to charity shops these days too, they dont want it, too much stuff. A lot of my stuff ends up in the dump

TheHauntedPencilCase · 24/12/2022 11:50

I've switched to the charity shop too. Free cycle was amazing when i lived in London but now I've moved all I get are CFs when trying to give things away. I've had to bin a set of knives recently because no charity shop can take them and I couldn't give them away. So frustrating. I've tried leaving stuff on the street too which also worked in London but here everything gets kicked along the street and smashed up, even good stuff.

Merryoldgoat · 24/12/2022 11:50

Facebook is full of twits. Freecycle is better.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 24/12/2022 11:51

Download the Olio app.

One of the requirements on there is the person has to collect.

I love it, it's been so handy and less stressful than Facebook groups and Freegle.

Heyahun · 24/12/2022 11:51

I use olio and find it good

some cheeky people I just quickly block time wasters and give it to the person who can come quickest

BethJ62 · 24/12/2022 11:53

I have messaged the woman and told her where I will leave the stuff . No response .

Teafor1please · 24/12/2022 11:53

I find you get fewer time wasters if you do put them on for a price, rather than free. Then when they come to collect you can always just say that it is free if you like.

Fireandflight · 24/12/2022 11:54

People are so entitled nowadays. Someone asked on Facebook if anyone had a particular board game. I had one, bought for a granddaughter who wasn't interested. It was still in its plastic wrapper, brand new. In the shops it was £36.
I messaged her to say she could have it if she collected it. She made 3 appointments on 3 consecutive days, but didn't show up to any of them. In the end I gave it to a charity shop.

JuneOsborne · 24/12/2022 11:54

It's the fact they're free. Brings out all the timewasters.

Out them in for a couple of quid. It does put the total timewasters off!

Xmassprout · 24/12/2022 11:54

I use the olio app to give stuff away. You give your feedback on communication and can mark them as a no show if they don't turn up. I've never had a problem, I just clearly state collection only.

SnackSizeRaisin · 24/12/2022 11:55

Sell it cheaply rather than give it away is my advice. People are much more grateful for cheap stuff than free stuff, and people will only pay if they want it. Giving it away always risks it just getting dumped - a shame if it's good quality things.

KnottyKnitting · 24/12/2022 11:56

We have a "Freebay" Facebook page in our area. The admins are extremely strict about people who are abusive or fussy and if this is noted or reported they are immediately banned from the group ( This includes people who don't say please and thank you in the comments.) Seems like a really nice group and stuff often goes quickly. Regular Facebook market place... not so much.

fairgame84 · 24/12/2022 11:56

I also had one of these on ebay recently. Item was collection only. Buyer paid online then sent me a message saying they could see it's a 3 hour drive each way so they will pay for fuel if I deliver.
I cancelled the sale.

Exactly this. If you put free you get a lot of CFs, if you ask maybe a fiver for the moses basket, it sifts them out in my experience.

I think when you offer stuff for free people assume there's something wrong with it and they'll end up taking it to the tip for you, having wasted their petrol.
