To have forgotten to take the ham out of the freezer.

I know, first world problems.
I was planning on cooking the joint of ham today in the slow cooker.
Remembered it's still in the freezer.

What's the best way to defrost it quickly so I don't give everyone food poisoning.

Can I whack it in the slow cooker frozen?
Its currently sat in a bowl of cold tap water in the sink. I'm such a plum.

In a big bowl with warm ish water- warm up the water when it gets cold. It will thaw in no time.

Also, not the point, but cooking it in coke is sooo delicious 🤤

MakeMineALarge1 · 24/12/2022 08:53

Does it have to be done today, let it defrost today and shove it in the oven tomorrow?

AutumnCrow · 24/12/2022 08:54

Crikey I don't know. I'd keep refreshing the water though so it doesn't end up sitting in freezing water.

You've reminded me to take things out of the freezer ...

I tried it in coke one year but everyone moaned.
I slow cook it then glaze it in honey and demerara sugar and whack in the oven.
Ideally I wanted to cook it today as we are not at home Christmas day.

Glad I could be of service to someone 😂

I did mine on auto defrost in microwave, took about 90 mins then 2 hours in ninja at 190

Using the microwave for that long would probably cost me more than the joint of ham itself 😂

Just put it in the slow cooker, it will be fine - I'm assuming it is going to be in there for a few hours anyway?

Well I did think that and yes it will be in for a good few hours. However I don't know how much longer I need to add as it's frozen.

I'd defrost in a sink of water and keep changing the water over. Setting a timer if you're like me and will forget because it will need to be more often than you think (10-20 mins I think).

You could probably get away with slow cooking but I think it would need 10+ hours if it's a big ham.

Choccolatte · 24/12/2022 09:16

You are my Christmas saviour. 🌟 Just about to leave for the whole day and wouldn't have taken the bird out the freezer. No way would it have defrosted by tomorrow. Hope the defrosting works for you :)

MilkyYay · 24/12/2022 09:19

Id put it in a plastic bowl full of tepid water and rest it on top of a radiator....

Tbh though, can't you just put it on this eve? Plenty of time to have it ready for lunch tomorrow

DonnaBanana · 24/12/2022 09:23

If you can get a skewer or other piece of metal all the way through it, it will thaw/cook a lot more quickly on the inside and have more even temperature.

Mulhollandmagoo · 24/12/2022 09:28

Fill your sink with tepid water and put the ham in, it should defrost fairly quickly, is there anyway you can slow.cook it through the night and glaze it and oven bake it in the morning?

Is cooking it for new years an option instead of tomorrow if you're not going to be home? I went down at 11pm last night as I remembered and took my turkey and ham out then.....slept like a baby last night 🤣🤣

Batteriesnotincluded1 · 24/12/2022 13:08

All sorted! I partially defrosted it in some water in the sink then whacked it in the slow cooker. It's now bubbling away nicely.

I always use a probe type thermometer to check internal temperature. It really is helpful to know something is cooked through.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/12/2022 13:35

Ham is cured, I'm not sure it's possible to give people food poisoning unless you leave it out until new year
