Child with thrush, where can I get treatment today??

DD (5) has thrush, says her bottom is really itchy and it's hurting when she pees. Obviously need to try and get her some cream (is it cream they use for little ones??). Can you get it over the counter for children?

From what I've read online it says it needs to be prescribed but given Gp surgery's are closed, 111 isn't picking up calls and when you do get through they say it can take 48 hours for a call back, what is my best option today? Can pharmacists prescribe treatment for a child?

Do you have sudacream at home? I’d start with that straight away before you get to the pharmacy. Personally thought thrush was itching but with discharge although don’t know symptoms in children.

Now I'm more confused. I asked to DD to point to where it is itchy and she pointed to her anus, I've just had a look and she's got a big, dark red circular rash around it. Looks very painful but she just says it's itchy not sore. Would this be thrush??

Call 111 and get an out of hours appointment.

organicapricot · 24/12/2022 07:48

This was what was prescribed.

Ring or pinworm OP.
She’ll haven scratching and itching it in her sleep too, love her.

Doesn’t sound like thrush at all.

girlmom21 · 24/12/2022 07:52

That's not thrush OP. Speak to a pharmacist. It's much more likely to be worms or eczema or just itchy from not wiping her bum properly.

organicapricot · 24/12/2022 07:48

This was what was prescribed.

You ideally need 2% rather than 1%.
Have you looked at her stools at all?
You will see worms if they’re there.

You can buy meds OTC for that.

girlmom21 · 24/12/2022 07:52

Pretty concerning you were happy to buy adult thrush treatment for a 5 year old with no signs of thrush

I’m inclined to agree. A GP will give you 2% topical IF it’s determined as being thrush.

Why would she have only anal thrush (I’m away that the yeast do live in the GI tract btw) rather than vaginal. This is not typical in small children at all.

Has she ever been diagnosed with it?

Sceptre86 · 24/12/2022 08:18

You should speak to 111 to have it diagnosed correctly by a nurse. it's important that a uti I ruled out. A red circular rash around the anus could be ringworm. It could also be a as a result of a few other things that's why a proper diagnosis is required. I'd phone them now as you'll likely be in a queue to get a call back. For now I'd give an antihistamine to help with itching and paracetamol for any pain/discomfort.

kshaw · 24/12/2022 08:21

I've bought it off prescription before

She does have symptoms of thrush, as clearly stated in op

I'd treat worms and thrush to be on the safe side.
I mean she could have both, poor love!

Just say the cream is for you.

dinosandprincesses · 24/12/2022 09:16

Thank you for all the helpful comments! Just to update we've just been to the pharmacy (111 sent us there). The pharmacist said he is 99.9% certain it is thrush so has given us some cream.

Untitledsquatboulder · 24/12/2022 09:18

Sounds even more like worms after your update. You don't generally catch thrush btw, it's a yeast that I've naturally in the vagina but can grow out if control if you are run down, take antibiotics, are pregnant etc.

Untitledsquatboulder · 24/12/2022 09:20

X post. Well if the canisten doesnt help maybe think about worming.

urrrgh46 · 24/12/2022 09:21

Actually sounds more like she's not wiped properly and the area is a bit inflamed give what you've said. The clotrimazole will do no harm so you could pop some of that on anyway. Neither will treating her for pin worms "just in case"! I think, if she were mine I'd treat with some sudacrem/Vaseline and a bit of clotrimazole and if that sorts it great. If not go for the pin worm treatment option.

Hollyhead · 24/12/2022 09:24

@girlmom21 the topical treatments are the same for children or adults so pipe down on trying to make the op feel bad.

Batcountry8 · 24/12/2022 09:27

Epiderm ointment is very mild and good for all types of skin irritation.

Can calm and form a barrier no nasties in it.

Order huge tub off Amazon.

Very good for peri menopausal and menopause dry skin too.

How I know 😂

dcadmamagain · 24/12/2022 09:49

Sounds like worms to me. I know pharmacist has disagreed but I think I would get some worm treatment in ready to use if needed as Xmas tomorrow. I’d then analyse her pop next time she goes - you can see them in there and treat accordingly

MulledWineAndMingePies · 24/12/2022 10:11

I don't think any pharmacist should be saying i
"it's 99.9%" thrush unless swab results were seen.
How unprofessional of them 😣

You absolutely can catch it.

Partners can catch it through sex.

Babies and mothers can pass it to one another through breastfeeding.

You absolutely can catch it from one another.

Did you show your daughters anus to him?

Otherwise, how can he say that.

No pharmacist should be looking at a child like that in a pharmacy, and so how would he otherwise know.

Have you checked her stool ?

(I’m a doctor btw).

The kid doesn't even have thrush. Her anus it itchy. So no.

LittleDonkeyKong · 24/12/2022 10:34

I would just go straight to an urgent treatment centre. She can be examined properly and a prescription issued if necessary
