Should I sped the 2k£ to fly for Xmas

I feel like I’m mad… maybe it’s Xmas 🎄 ? Don’t get on with mum but she’s 80 now and no not frail… more a firecracker. My youngest has flown over ( yes I paid for him to go) and there for a month. I’m relishing my time alone in my home as youngest has been here since July and is sorting himself out with school and work etc.
so this evening I was looking to see fares and thinking well I could… mainly cos I can and. Two day turn around I could handle, but bug stir’s in North America so nothing is guaranteed. Fares are understandably expensive and yes I’ve paid for the youngest to goans have Xmas with his gran. AIBU? It’s just me and I have his uni fees in September so trying to weigh up the most sensible options

Toronto will be just as cold and windy as New York City. I live about 75 miles south of Toronto.

Personally, I would not go. I'm assuming you thought it through earlier on, when your son was first making plans to go, and decided to stay home. Whatever reasons you had then are still good. If you go now it will be a scramble, both for you to travel and for people who haven't been expecting you to shift their plans (although that last part may be minor impact; you'll know best).

I'm in the US at the moment and while it's calm where I am there have been LOADS of airport closures and many more on the watch list - and that's on top of it already being the busiest few days of the year. And it'll be very expensive to fly. I'd stay put for Christmas and consider visiting (your mother? family?) later on if you're still thinking about it next week.

Brighteyedtriangle · 23/12/2022 23:31

I would say sleep on it and decide tomorrow. I think it would make more sense to arrange to fly out next year with your son if he wants to go again. It would be much cheaper to do an advance booking.

Enjoy your me time for the next month and spend some money on yourself. Sounds like you need cheering up. I dont think making a rash decision now would be enjoyable and you may regret wasting the money. Sounds like two day turnaround would be absolute hell

@wackamole very sensible advice. Thank you !

@Brighteyedtriangle more sensible advice! Actually quite content but pondering whether I make the effort to do the ´family thing’ … however your suggestions make good sense!!

Go for New Year instead OP? A few more days to plan and hopefully improved weather?

monsteronahill · 24/12/2022 00:23

Hi OP, currently travelling from the east coast - the storm is bad!! It's -15• and freezing, snow and ice everywhere and it's getting worse. About to go through a couple of hours of horrible turbulence too, I'd give it a pass this year and enjoy your peace and quiet 😊

FelicityFlops · 24/12/2022 00:52

Do they want you there? Would any of them be Mumsnet "devastated" if you didn't spend Christmas with them?
I think the fact that you mentioned enjoying your time alone answers your question. Go another time when there is not so much mass hype and over-sentimentalisation?

HeddaGarbled · 24/12/2022 00:57

Planning not your strong point?

MenaiMna · 24/12/2022 01:05

Multiple family members stuck in various airports across multiple airports in multiple storms in US & Canada right now. Don't do it. Cosy up, stream "planes, trains & automobiles" and save yourself £2k.

LaVieestBelleNestCePas · 24/12/2022 01:22

Thanks everyone !!’ Staying home 🎄😇🥰

Good move, OP! It's an absolute mess across Canada and the US right now. We had our flights through Toronto cancelled today.

Onnabugeisha · 24/12/2022 02:18

It’s windy and -31C where my brother lives (US/Canada border). You made the right decision.

Hillcrest2022 · 24/12/2022 03:58

Right decision.

I flew from London to NY yesterday. Today's it's minus 10 and flights are disrupted. It takes 2 hours to get from jfk to the city so best avoid if you were thinking of coming for only 2 days.

knitnerd90 · 24/12/2022 04:31

God no, it's -15C here right now and the airports are a mess. Glad you decided against.
