Giff Gaff

Is Giff Gaff too good to be true?
I have bought my own smart phone handset recently (from Cex at £160) so I understand that you pay that off when you have a phone on contract making it more expensive than Giff Gaff, but it seems too good to be true.
I remember being about 17 and my dad taking out a mobile phone contract and it being at least £20 per month with the phone included. I remember he could have paid alot more but I didn't want him to spend it.
The price plans on Giff Gaff sound very reasonable and with my calculations on data, I could be very comfortable on £8 per month.
Also, I think Giff Gaff says free or unlimited texts and minutes.
👉 Is data counted as being the amount of Internet you use when not on WiFi? You know, when you press the data arrows to get online?
According to my phones settings, I use around 3.5 GB per month.
I am careful with it but use it on the bus sometimes and when I can't get WiFi. I never use it to watch TV shows or YouTube, I wait for WiFi for that. You're not charged for WiFi usage, are you?
I use it for Google maps also.
I've run it past one friend and he says it's not a scam and that he uses a similar network for just £5 per month.
I suppose the only thing bad is the limited customer service that the company will save money on. My friend told me a while ago that its largely answered by fellow customers and online forums.

Thanks for reading

Giff Gaff isn't a contract, you pay for a 'goodybag' monthly by debit card. Most of them work in a similar way - I've moved round a few to try and find a good signal at home, you can check the coverage maps on the OFCOM website.

I've recently moved from Giff Gaff to ID mobile to get the better signal at home and also because I visit the Isle of Man regularly and Giff Gaff treats that as out of package costs, which are £££s, but it's in the included free roaming with ID mobile. There's subtle differences between the SIM Only providers for things like overseas travel, so check this if it's relevant to you. DP had to pay £2 a day to use date abroad with Sky, but it was free with Giff Gaff for example.

I am on £8/month and ds(18) is on £10/month. Have been using it for at least 6 years from when ds got his first phone and never had any problems with them.

If you run out of data one month, you can just bring forward the start your next goody bag.

gogohmm · 23/12/2022 15:34

I've used it for 5 years. It's really good and unlike many I even get free calls/data in the eu

Blanketpolicy · 23/12/2022 15:35

Should also say GiffGaff runs on the O2 network. ID Mobile is on Three's network. There are probably others on on other networks. Depends on where you are which one gives you the best signal.

Jeffjefftyjeff · 23/12/2022 15:41

Giffgaff is great. Only challenges I’ve found are a) can’t do wifi calling; b) can’t do that thing where you pay by a text (eg for charity phone ins). But positives greatly outweigh these issues

skilpadde · 23/12/2022 16:01

I've been with GiffGaff for more than a decade, and pay £8 a month.

PositiveLife · 23/12/2022 16:03

I've used Giffgaff for years. I used to get the £6 deal but found that I went over sometimes if I was away from home or was somewhere with poor WiFi, so now I go for the £8 one.
I've not had any issues but a friend has noticed that when someone leaves a voicemail, their number doesn't save in the call history. It wouldn't matter to me as I don't get called by people I don't know but he does for various reasons (work, hobbies).

GlitterNails · 23/12/2022 17:33

I've used them years. If you need more data that month - say you are going away and will be using more - you can just increase your goodybag for that month. It tells you if they suggest you should switch to save money.

Never had any issues with them.

Jupiter15 · 23/12/2022 17:40

Have used gift gaff for years and would recommend.

RuthW · 23/12/2022 17:50

Giff gaff are fabulous. I've used them for years with no probs.

bitfit · 23/12/2022 17:55

Also used them for years myself and now my kids as they've got old enough to have their own phones, never a single problem. They also have good deals on refurbished phones too

MsPolly · 23/12/2022 18:08

It'll be having a SIM only contract that is making it far more cost effective. I have a sim only with 3 and only pay £8 for unlimited minutes and text and 30GB of data.

amicissimma · 23/12/2022 18:25

I've been on GiffGaff for years. Practically only get the £6 Goodybag which now gives 2Gb data. The price has increased by £1 over the many years, but the data keeps increasing. Also the calls and texts, which are now unlimited, even at £6. They are persisting with EU roaming for the forseeable.

I don't know what the PP means about not being able to do wifi calling. The wifi isn't anything to do with GiffGaff (or any provider) and I can use wifi with no SIM at all, to do all the wifi things. You can certainly tether with GiffGaff.

I have had to make phone calls from various parts of the world and, allthough expensive, as with most providers, I've had no connection problems at all. You can top up online, so it's easy to put some credit on if you get caught with the need to make an unexpected international call. I keep a little credit on just in case I have to use data in some distant land in order to top up for a call.

Squisita · 23/12/2022 19:13

Seriously?

They’ve been around for years.

I’m not with GiffGaff but they are expensive for me. I pay £3pm for unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 2gb data pm.

TimeToFlyNow · 23/12/2022 19:15

I was with them for years, one of the dc still is. Never had a problem

hannahbanana2007 · 23/12/2022 19:56

Can anyone confirm or explain the WiFi calling / texting please - can you use giffgaff for this? We live rurally and there is no mobile network signal at all so have to have WiFi calling etc or phone is unusable. Am looking for a new sim for my son as only found out this wasn't standard when we bought a Tesco sim!

Will let someone on giff gaff answer the direct question - but WiFi calling over WhatsApp will work Irrespective of provider

ScroogeMcDuckling · 23/12/2022 21:55

Giff Gaff we’re good a few years ago, but they didn’t lower their prices when others came along.

We went into smarty for a while, Tesco were good, if you had a Clubcard you got three times what you paid for, Asda were very reasonable for a while.

Giff Gaff I’m told have “restructured” their pricing and are competitive again and as someone else said it O2 airwaves.

At the moment, we are on a contract with 3, for two phones, unlimited everything for £30, and they aren’t fussy about tethering which Giff Gaff used to be very prissy about

Not sure about giff gaff but ID mobile supports WiFi calling/texting.

Passportpondery · 24/12/2022 07:51

I have the £10 goody bag monthly. They have just increased the data on it from 15-20gb.

I have ran out of data once (holiday so no wifi) and I just bought a new £10 goody bag early with no problems.

the only issue I have is I find the signal isn’t as good as when I was on EE.

I don't think giff gaff has WiFi calling because I've just switched from giff gaff to ID and the WiFi calling icon appeared all by itself, it wasn't a thing when I was on giff gaff.

But am very happy with ID so far, I can actually make calls on my phone at home which has never been an option before.

rookiemere · 24/12/2022 08:16

Another good feature of giffgaff if you go abroad to European countries it's included in your Uk goody bag package. DH tried to get me to change to his provider because they are a pound or so cheaper, but had to pay £2 a day when we were in Lanzarote.

XelaM · 24/12/2022 08:20

GiffGaff is THE BEST! I pay £25 for unlimited everything and it works abroad as well and reception is very good. My daughter's Three on the other hand is rubbish. She wants to switch.

Mummieslncorporated · 24/12/2022 08:33

I have a sim only £8 tariff with O2 that gives me way more data than I need. Phone contact prices are highly competitive.

Runningintolife · 24/12/2022 09:19

Another ten year plus giff gaff user. I use WhatsApp for WiFi calls. I have always found what I need from the customer service bits. Unlike other similar systems. Not sure which option was which on your vote which might be why its split.
