to think I had some neurological episode in my sleep last night

I woke up this morning with my right side of jaw completely fixed, tremendously painful and my whole face and neck area in agony. I took two nurofen and they took the pain away until they started to ease off after eight hours. My dentist has told me that I must grind, such is the state of my molars. He suggested a mouth guard. I didn't get one . The pain is back but being managed by nurofen. It's working. Last night, my ex texted and it got pretty heated .I have a lot of stress and this is the major reason for my stress at the moment although I don't seem to get angry despite having very good reason to be. It's just not my personality. Do you think this is related?Could it be something else? It has never been so sore or so bad . And I've blocked him now.

Surely it's more likely to be a stress reaction than a neurological event? It sounds like you were clenching your jaw in your sleep.

Sounds like lockjaw, which is largely caused by grinding. The mouth guard will help provide so much relief and prevent further damage to the jaw. Definitely get one!

I’m a grinder. The mouth guard really does help. I get terrible pain when I don’t wear it.

CarPoor · 22/12/2022 22:13

It sounds like TMJd from grinding your teeth. Which you know you do but haven't got a mouth guard
You've just overworked your jaw muscles from grinding.

ILoveeCakes · 22/12/2022 22:14

You got told to get a mouthguard, didn't get one but want what from Mumsnet? Magic?

Do mouth guards reduce grinding headaches and is there any risk of choking?

bridgetreilly · 22/12/2022 22:47

This doesn’t sound neurological at all. Grinding from stress, that’s all.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 22/12/2022 22:50

Another vote for grinding your teeth. I wasn’t able to eat properly for several days after one particular episode as my jaw was so sore and ‘stuck’ I couldn’t open my mouth properly.

If they risked choking doctors and dentists wouldn't recommend them

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 22/12/2022 22:59

My mouth guard has been life-changing.

gamerchick · 22/12/2022 23:01

Why didn't you get a guard? Get a ruddy guard man!

Yes they do reduce grinding headaches.

It's best to get a properly moulded mouth guard made by your densit, the ones you can buy in a shop can end up causing other issues.
