To ask you to donate DryNites/Ninjamas/Night-pants to food banks?

RaggedBlousedPhilanthropist · 22/12/2022 13:40

A friend of mine volunteers in a food bank.

The donations they receive always include lots of nappies but they are getting people coming in who really need night pants for older children who still wet the bed.

Given the cost of laundering sheets, being able to get night pants would be a Godsend to many parents who are at breaking point financially.

The trouble is, although they get people asking for them regularly, they are virtually never donated.

My DD still wears them so from now on I’ll be getting an extra pack for the food bank donation point every time I shop.

Please could I ask you to do the same if you can afford to?

Incidentally, they have far too much corned beef…

The Aldi night pants are much cheaperntuan Drynites or the Pampers
ones so fill a trolly with them
and you’ve got a bumper Christmas
gift for your local food bank and lots
of relieved mums.

PetraBP · 22/12/2022 16:17

You could even do a corned beef for pants exchange! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Quveas · 22/12/2022 16:24

I'll add, most people know about period poverty now, but the one few people talk about is bladder weakness products. Many older and more vulnerable people can suffer from bladder weakness and the product costs are astronomical. Bladder weakness is also isolating for many people - they may avoid going out or socialising for fear of having an accident / soaking themselves. And they are embarassed to ask about such products - asking about a child's needs is seen as ok, but not for an adult. We had some donated locally and they lietrally flew off the shelves, so they are now one of our asks of people.

PetraBP · 22/12/2022 22:57

Let’s add Tena pants (and similar) to the list. Good call.

ny20005 · 22/12/2022 23:02

Please check with your local Foodbank to see what products they need.

We're never asked for pull ups for older kids. Always need size 5 & 6 nappies though. Mostly people donate newborn nappies.

We're not allowed to give out bladder control products - they are a medical need so would be referred to doctors (in Scotland so not sure if they'd be prescribed)

We're away short of tinned meat so could gladly use corned beef

RaggedBlousedPhilanthropist · 28/12/2022 20:44

Yes, don’t forget about the period poverty too. Tampons and pads in all types are needed too.

Also the size 5,6 and 7 nappies. They have an over supply of newborn size but people forget that babies grow quickly!

Some good ideas thank you

Yes, I actually have two packs as in my boot to give as having stocked-up my son suddenly became dry overnight a few months ago! Do you know if they’d accept a 3rd pack that’s been opened & has one or two taken out?

NosyNeighbour22 · 28/12/2022 21:14

Pampers are giving away free packs of ninjamas with a coupon at the moment. People could claim
the free pack and donate them if they don’t need them.

Have done this thanks! When it comes it's going straight to my food bank.

I will ask her and let you know.

I suspect it’s only unopened packs that are accepted.

You could always leave them out in a baby change facility if that’s the case. A parent with a large baby/child may be glad of them.

I have a big bag of large size nappies I keep meaning to give to the food bank you've just given me the kick to go up there tomorrow

Opened packs are accepted at my local food bank (trussell trust)

What would help is if they weren't so restrictive on donation timings! 930-1130 Monday to Friday is useless if you work, luckily I'm off for Christmas this week so I'll head up tomorrow

My ds is double Incontinant so he gets pull ups on prescription. He’s had a huge growth spurt so I have boxes of pull ups for up to 15 year olds. I can’t return. Do u think there would be of use to a food bank

YABU. I will donate money or what my local food bank lists as what they are low on, on their website. I’ve never seen these listed.

They aren't listed at mine either. I had a clear out when night training was secure and emailed the food bank who pretty much bit my hand off for them.

If you have anything you're unsure if it's useful email them and ask.

EwwSprouts · 28/12/2022 22:20

I suspect it’s only unopened packs that are accepted. Yes unopened only applies to everything. Agree with a PP lots of new born nappies but always out of size 5/6.

People are good about thinking about period poverty. We have an excess of sanitary products and will ask most women if they would like some if they don't mention it

WhereIsMyRollingPin · 28/12/2022 22:23

Our food bank has a separate section for toiletries, nappies etc. My neighbour volunteers there and says they give away huge quantities of nappies.

Thank you for the reminder OP, I will get some this week.

Merlott · 28/12/2022 22:54

Didn't know food banks want nappies - have a few packs!

Opening hours for donations - food bank itself very restricted but can drop off at all the supermarkets round here, do check this out.

I imagine different food banks have differing shortages of stuff.

Re opened packs, I’ve checked and the one my friend volunteers at DOES accept opened packs- they just check the contents and tape them shut.

Yes, the one my friend works at would, so I’m sure many others would.

I donate a big bag of porridge every week.

JamMakingWannaBe · 29/12/2022 01:03

There is a nappy donation bin on my local Morrison's. It accepts open packets.

Pootle22 · 29/12/2022 01:24

It's really better to donate cash instead of specifically going out to buy something. Saves on all the collections and transfers and the food bank can then buy whatever they need in bulk.

It took me a while to get used to it, filling a basket and putting it into the collection felt like I was doing much more but I'm sure the cash is more efficient.

We still buy physical items with dc, they love choosing a meal for some imaginary children to enjoy.
