How do you know of you need an ehcp?

DD has ASD and is under CAMHs for her anxiety. A big trigger for this is school though she masks this there so they don't see it at all. She is also struggling with school work and not doing well academically.

CAMHs has advised that she needs an EHCP, but school say it isn't needed/wait to see how the assess plan do review goes.

Who do I listen to and how do I tell if DD really needs one. I don't want to fall out with the school but don't want to let my DD down either.

I applied for an EHCNA over and over and over again for six years and was fobbed off BEFORE I went private for an assessment. I don’t know what is so hard to understand about this. What do you think I was doing for six years? Not applying for an EHCNA and sitting with my thumbs up my arse?

You didn’t say you applied for an EHCNA over and over, or even at all. You made it sounds like you waited 6 years for the school to apply - “I did initially try and get the school to do the EHCP, but after waiting for SIX YEARS, I went private.”

If you were refused an EHCNA by the LA you should have appealed to SENDIST rather than applying over and over.

Many parents do listen to the school and wait years for them to apply and listen to the school when they incorrectly say an EHCP is necessary when they could have applied themselves.

*when they incorrectly say an EHCP isn’t necessary

Ok, sorry for that. I thought it was clear I was doing the parent part of the process. I didn’t spell it out though, so now I see why you were confused.

If you made a parental request for an EHCNA you didn’t need to school to apply or agree. If the LA refused to assess or refused to issue you could have appealed, the vast majority of appeals are upheld.

Thanks for all these replies. It's really interesting to read the responses. I really need to take it all in. Very different views from sencos, parents and hcps.

Challenge the school on this, most of the time they’re just being lazy because an EHCP will place certain obligations on them to provide additional help. If they won’t assist then look into doing it yourself, get a social worker to assist. An EHCP is effective until age 25 and could make a lot of difference educationally.

By going private for the assessment, what do you mean? Is this a private EP report?
