Employer extreme surveillance

I recently started a new job with the very best intentions.

This week I have been on a training course. It’s a regulated course and has an exam at the end. it’s being held using zoom.

During the course today I had my camera on and there was suddenly a pink overlay over my camera. I thought perhaps there was a connection problem however a couple of seconds later a message came up on my screen saying another app is accessing my webcam and can see me!

It totally freaked me out. It went on for about 5 minutes. Everyone else in the training camera was fine.

I then emailed the boss saying that I was on a training course and I have to have my camera on and it stopped working due to surveillance. His response call the IT department.

I then contacted an old contact of mine who worked at the company. He told me that they mirror you on the computer and take shots of you and whatever you have on the screen.

They were reported to the union a while ago.

Anyway upon further digging around I found out the app they use for lone working continues to monitor you after you have finished your work activity for a further 3 DAYS. This means we’re being tracked and under surveillance in the evening, holidays and weekends… They also want to use the app in personal vehicles.

Im worried. I work at home and often go open my curtains in the morning in my pjs or undressed. I’m worried my employer has seen me. I live alone.

I’m freaking out. I feel very stressed.

@MechanicaHound feels like I've entered a parallel universe

ohioriver · 21/12/2022 22:17

Well if you're not happy with it, don't take the job 🤷🏼‍♀️.

I'm monitored in working hours. It's the downside of wfh. But the op isn't being asked to put this on her own phone, it's on their phone and / or laptop - so just turn it off outside working hours.

If she was going to an office she would be on cctv in a lot of places.

Getmeoutofhereitsshit · 21/12/2022 22:21

@ohioriver

theres nothing in the contract about the app - was not given anything about it

ohioriver · 21/12/2022 22:22

So where did it say the all must be used?

ohioriver · 21/12/2022 22:22

*app

Getmeoutofhereitsshit · 21/12/2022 22:24

I had to ask what the policy is

I was then given this policy with a one line sentence

ohioriver · 21/12/2022 22:25

And you've continued to work for them?

Getmeoutofhereitsshit · 21/12/2022 22:27

I don’t think this level of intrusion is ok.

I also feel resentful.

I should add in they’re also obsessed with social media. Facebook, instagram and Twitter and LinkedIn. I’ve told them I don’t use those platforms and since starting (less than a month) I’ve been asked 7 times.

OP posts:
ohioriver · 21/12/2022 22:28

Ok so turn them off when you're not working and put them in a cupboard ?

Getmeoutofhereitsshit · 21/12/2022 22:29

I only found out this in the last 48 hours and I’ve been a course. I’m not not going to complete the course as I’m already paying for it

OP posts:
treesandweeds · 21/12/2022 22:30

Why are you paying for the course?!

Ohtheweatheroutsideistoocold · 21/12/2022 22:32

Why are you Oakington down a course you need for work? that's as concerning if jot even more so than the surveillance

Getmeoutofhereitsshit · 21/12/2022 22:33

Regulator required course I have to have

OP posts:
Ohtheweatheroutsideistoocold · 21/12/2022 22:33

That should say paying for, my autocorrect is having a nightmare today

Ohtheweatheroutsideistoocold · 21/12/2022 22:33

Getmeoutofhereitsshit · 21/12/2022 22:33

Regulator required course I have to have

If you need it for work they should pay for it

UntilHootOwlReturns · 21/12/2022 22:34

This is a breach of GDPR.

Data can only be collected for legitimate purposes that you have consented to, and used in a proportionate manner.

Of you've not given permission for this through a term in your employment contract then it is illegal.

Getmeoutofhereitsshit · 21/12/2022 22:34

They won’t pay for it - the training

Getmeoutofhereitsshit · 21/12/2022 22:35

I’ve started looking for new job

OP posts:
Ohtheweatheroutsideistoocold · 21/12/2022 22:38

Good, I hope you get a new better job nice and quickly

Never work for a company that expects you to pay for mandatory training, they are likely to be shit employers

Getmeoutofhereitsshit · 21/12/2022 22:39

@Ohtheweatheroutsideistoocold

i can’t wait to leave

OP posts:
PlainJaneSuperBrain99 · 21/12/2022 22:41

Err this all seems a bit too Minority Report for me. Cant believe people are telling you to tape over your camera as if this is simply something you should tolerate.

Remagirl · 21/12/2022 23:03

Legally your employer has to inform you if you are being monitored, it should be clearly stated in staff handbook, policies and your contract. They sound like they are breaching data protection, privacy laws etc. I couldn't work for an employer that did this.

randomchap · 21/12/2022 23:06

Do you have a union you can take this to?

Getmeoutofhereitsshit · 21/12/2022 23:09

Someone has already taken it to a union

i don’t have their details and I’m still asking around

check out unison - it says about employers wanting to microchip employees - this is the same technology as that used for pets

FlamingJingleBells · 21/12/2022 23:12

I'd report them to the independent Commissioners Office.
