It's pronounced 'brek-fast' isn't it?
Hearing people pronounce it 'break fast' really sets my teeth on edge.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Brek fust here

Ofcourseshecan · 20/12/2022 19:42

Some people think you’re meant to pronounce words as they are spelt, eg choc-o-late. That’s a mistake. I suppose it’s because, if you’re not quite confident, things look more official when you see them in print.

My Grandma always called it break-fast. She also said rasp-berries.

God I miss her.

Break-fast here - also a Scot, but when I lived down South, I was often mocked for it 🙄

Brekker.

But the word means to “break one’s fast” ie first meal after overnight fasting while asleep, or a fast for religious purposes.

So pronouncing the word in two syllables has a logic to it(weird, but there’s a logic).

You're not talking to five year olds. No one in here needs the origin of the word "breakfast" explained to them, it's about as self explanatory as it gets!

SillySausage81 · 21/12/2022 07:07

I’ve never in my life heard anyone pronounce it “break-fast”... where are you finding these people?!

Rubyupbeat · 21/12/2022 08:03

@Van34
We pronounce it the same and are from east London.

alfagirl73 · 21/12/2022 10:01

I pronounce it brek-fst - with the "brek" as in "deck".

I've heard numerous people in Scotland pronounce the "break" part as in "brake" - including relatives - but that's the only place I've heard that variation.

Ocrumbs · 21/12/2022 10:03

I met someone who did this the other day. They were a minor government official and I do think they were enjoyin the distance saying it 'properly',.gave them. I just pretened not to notice. Regional variations apart, I think some people just enjoy setting themselves above others, even when it makes them appear ridiculous.
