To think this isn’t my problem?

Unavoidably late into work today (bad traffic accident) so rang in to explain (handsfree) and was told there was no cover so I would have to ring round my colleagues and get someone to cover me.

AIBU or is this completely not on?

Not enough info. I think it depends on your work place.

TheShellBeach · 19/12/2022 18:24

I don't know; are you usually expected to find your own cover in situations like this?

PyjamaFan · 19/12/2022 18:26

Unless it's usually your role to find cover, no.

IamSmarticus · 19/12/2022 18:30

Well I would have just said that I was sorry, but I was driving and so wouldn't be able to do that.

Aprilx · 19/12/2022 18:30

Also don’t know. I think what you do, how senior you are also comes into it. I think it is reasonable for you to say that you don’t want to be making lots of phone calls whilst you are driving (despite being handsfree), but the “not my problem” seems a bit off if you are in a professional role or even slightly senior.

Danikm151 · 19/12/2022 18:34

It should be up to your workplace to find cover not you.
if there’s unavoidable traffic, chances are cover would be delayed too.

of course it depends on your role. If you’re a carer for instance and it’s urgent then multiple people calling for cover increases chances.
if you work in a shop then they can frig off

gettingolderandgrumpier · 19/12/2022 18:59

Well how late will you be ? 10 minutes 1 hour longer ? . Tbh if you rang somebody they’d have to get ready and get themselves there and potentially stuck in traffic themselves so I think it’s one of those unavoidable things that happen.

TyphoonSpagoon · 19/12/2022 19:03

How late were you going to be that cover was required, I can’t imagine any situation this would be reasonable.

Stompythedinosaur · 19/12/2022 19:07

Depends on your role and workplace policy.

Windtunnel · 19/12/2022 19:08

Is there another person should have done it - like an office manager etc?
Sounds a bit poor and unsympathetic

Irridescantshimmmer · 19/12/2022 19:09

As you were in your car, I don't think you should be ringing round your colleagues as its a distraction from the road which is not safe, handsfree or not handsfree, its a ridiculous demand your colleague made.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/12/2022 19:09

I think it depends on many things. Like whether this is usually part of your role.

But generally speaking I’d have thought that someone who was already at their place of work would be better places to find cover than someone in a vehicle.

AlisonDonut · 19/12/2022 19:14

Surely by the time you had found all their phone numbers and called them you'd be in work?
