So many people unwell over Xmas?

PumpkinTruffle · 19/12/2022 07:26

Only gone and got myself ill with the flu for the second time in a row so close to Xmas time. I swear so many people never used to get be unwell, but so many others appear to be ill with the flu or really bad colds.

Any ideas how to shift it! I've got so many things planned for the next week and praying I don't end up in a worse state.

Don't try and push through it. Bed rest, paracetamol and ibuprofen, lots of water. It will hopefully speed you recovery.

I've been ill for well over a month and I think it's mainly due to trying to carry on as normal (and failing!).

Singleandproud · 19/12/2022 07:34

I'm sorry your ill.

No, I think everyone's always gotten ill this time of year its always been cold and flu season we were just all wearing face masks the last couple of years which limited them. I've been unwell every Christmas holidays since I started school in 1990 especially as the body relaxes into the holiday - except last year but then I got Covid in January.

I hope you feel better soon, I'd go with all the old remedies, plenty of rest and fluids, chicken soup and a bit of fresh air.

Singleandproud · 19/12/2022 07:35

you're

spiderontheceiling · 19/12/2022 07:37

Whilst I agree that this year is bad, many of my Christmas memories involve a parent or grandparent being ill or my mum being disappointed that she'd done loads of prep for a drinks or dinner party only for a bunch of guests to pull out. So, in family folklore, some Christmases are referred to as something like "the year you got the table football", others are "the year we forgot the pigs in blankets" and others are "the year your grandparents missed Christmas Day as they were so unwell".

Ocrumbs · 19/12/2022 07:38

I started taking these for my long covid and I think they've helped with the seasonal sniffles too so worth researching.

Vitamin C and zinc
Vitamin D

MardyMincepie · 19/12/2022 07:38

I had three really lovely things planned over the last two weeks and missed them all because I was unwell.

You will delay recovery if you don’t rest and it is really not a good idea to spread your germs around.

RulaCabula · 19/12/2022 07:38

Someone in our house always gets sick at Christmas so you have my sympathy.
Dd comes home from Uni today and she is full of cold / cough / sore throat. Hopefully she doesn't pass it on to the rest of us!

Alexandernevermind · 19/12/2022 07:39

Covid is going through my home, the joy 🙄. My parents have a bronchitis type bug. Dc's school cancelled the end of year Carol service because there are so many different bug circulating.

Ocrumbs · 19/12/2022 07:40

Also consider paying for a flu jab if not eligible for a free one

Hughsrunning · 19/12/2022 07:40

Rest is really import OP. Don't keep pushing through.
@Zampa I've been sick for five weeks. I think it was a RSV upper respiratory virus - I've had a secondary sinus and throat infection after and then the GP said the virus was still there. He asked if I'd rushed back to work - I hadn't but didn't realise I'd a secondary infection. It's miserable. I think ( fingers crossed) I'm on the mend. Hope you and the OP are too.

PinkHeadphones · 19/12/2022 07:42

I also think it's always been a thing. I remember so many Christmas Days when someone was ill, I especially remember my Dad having flu and me writing to Santa on Xmas Eve asking him to make Dad better (we weren't a religious family so may have got Santa confused with God Grin
There was Christmas ten years ago when my nephew was ill all day and only perked up in the evening and the one when my one year old started throwing up on Boxing Day and didn't stop until January 2. I also remember watching a school play where the three kings processed from the stage to the back of the audience and when they came back there were only two because one had been sick at the back of the hall.
Basically most Christmases I've had my fingers crossed that we don't get whatever is going around that year.

Hughsrunning · 19/12/2022 07:44

@PumpkinTruffle I'd agree with the other poster. Definitely get a flu jab if you haven't this year.

We haven't got our tree up or anything. We are doing minimal decorations - tree only and just tidying a little. DH and D's have been doing their best to keep things going but the house is in goblin mode. One Christmas like this won't kill us!

FortSalem86 · 19/12/2022 07:47

I remember several Christmases where I had a terrible cold. I don't think it is anything new.

Hughsrunning · 19/12/2022 07:48

My father worked in the Lighthouse service (not in the UK) and one Christmas they had to fix a buoy in the sea. Obviously it was bobbing up and down while they did the fix. Unfortunately back on land everything continued to move up and down for my Dad and he couldn't eat Christmas dinner due to motion sickness! Poor man.

Shinyandnew1 · 19/12/2022 07:54

I agree there are lots of bugs around at the moment-everyone’s got something in our house at the moment. I do also always remember being ill at Christmas when I was young though.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 19/12/2022 07:57

This is what happens when you mask ppl up for years and don't share germs! All of our immunity is shot.

emmathedilemma · 19/12/2022 08:00

I’ve actually got my Xmas cold a few days earlier than normal this year!

MuggleMe · 19/12/2022 08:08

It's definitely worse because everyone's been more careful the last couple of years so immune system is weaker.

PumpkinTruffle · 19/12/2022 15:16

Thank you for all your support - hopefully we all get better before Xmas xx

Sorry to hear. Try to rest whenever you can, the obvious keep hydrated, nasal spray also really helps with congestion. Hope you feel better for Christmas. It's the same for us, someone is always unwell over Christmas. 2 of my children are currently full of cold and coughing, one feeling worse than the other with a headache and temp. Hoping everyone will be well enough for the big day x
