Why did I bother getting up at 5am for a Tesco order

Is it just me or is everything sold out/out of stock?

I secured my order for this Thursday. Just trying to order a few bits. Tin of roses, nice crisps, carrot for Rudolph, mince pies for Santa, nice gin. No doubt the few bits I’ve ordered will get silly subs.

barely anything is in stock. Very disappointed.

Queuing is shit

Yep, but if your online shop is full of subs or missing items, you have to go and queue anyway.

I put the early Christmas stuff in a top cupboard or wardrobe and don't mention it to DH in case he thinks they are for eating now, usually he says a couple of days before Christmas, must get some chocolate oranges, of course they are all sold out or not £1 anymore, then and I say, it's okay I got them ages ago.

Everything is shit. Tried to get 2 hot water bottles for DC just for stocking fillers - nearly everywhere sold out except Sainsbury’s who are wanting to charge me 6 quid to collect them myself! Life just feels like one massive rip off at the moment.

FredaFox · 18/12/2022 16:07

Early morning deliveries are picked the night before so if the shelves are empty before the night time shelf stackers start you miss out

Yabu about tins of roses they have been in offer for months, I'd imagine they want the stock gone , who buys them in January?!😂

Agree with other pp we have a Christmas box (not cupboard) and items are bought in advance and put away, my mum always did it and now so do I

Why is everyone still trying to shop for Christmas food? I think you're doing it wrong, there are always rafts of people complaining about their deliveries being short, and then having to hunt for various items, as well as join the queues to pay - well frankly I can't be bothered!

Other than turkey & sliced ham (on order at local butchers) and fresh local artisan bread & milk & double cream from village shop (both on order to collect Friday), I bought all my veg 2 days ago at the local farm shop. It's fresh, and good quality and will last for weeks out in the shed.
I may pop to M&S or Waitrose around 3 or 4pm on Christmas Eve and trawl for bargains for the freezer - last year I got a large gammon for 1/10 price plus some party food down from £5 to 50p, but other than that you'll not catch me in a supermarket this side of New Year!

Because some of us don't have a village shop, or a shed, or whatever else you smuggins-like mentioned here? I suspect you'd be perplexed at the way a lot of shop and have to go about our lives. If only we thought to use the butcher we'd be fine though. Silly us.

girlmom21 · 18/12/2022 15:52

Ah they don't have that option in our local supermarket @Ilikewinter

Oh really....well yeah in that case then queuing is shit 😂😂

glamourousindierockandroll · 18/12/2022 15:57

@girlmom21 how bad are the queues in your local supermarkets?

I love an online grocery shop but the single one of the year that I would never do is the Christmas one for precisely this reason. I'd rather make my own substitutions on the spot for fresh stuff and/or see if I could try another place if needed.

For stuff with a longer shelf life, I've definitely learned to start early as well. I've struggled getting tins of Roses, chocolate oranges, gift tags etc before, and I've been late with advent calendars and ended up with crap ones. It's annoying when you have your heart set on a particular thing and they've all gone.

It's our first Christmas here but weekends are horrible. We only have one supermarket.

I'm going to go and get all the nibbles on Monday then go to the farm shop for veg etc.

user2859453 · 18/12/2022 16:25

I live in quite a big town and don't have a butcher, artisan bread shop or farm shop within miles. You can get meat from the counter in Waitrose and that's about it.

Did you order any self awareness from your organic butcher or artisan baker?

ehb102 · 18/12/2022 16:31

Tesco online orders seem to take stock from what is in store at the time you place the order. Log back in later and the stock may be replenished.

bizzywiththefizzy · 18/12/2022 16:31

How many times in the past months have you walked past piles of Christmas stuff ? Yet when folk on here have said they are buying stuff for Christmas early autumn, they are mocked and people cry it's only Sep/oct .
If it's important to you at Christmas , get it when you see it .

OooScotland · 18/12/2022 16:37

I started a tesco order for tomorrow but everything I wanted was out of stock. I cancelled it and we’ve just come back from the smaller tesco near us (not the superstore the order would have come from) and everything was there.

MrsR87 · 18/12/2022 16:38

I can’t think of anything more stressful at this time of year than relying on an online delivery and playing guess the substitute which is inevitably going to mean I would have to go to the supermarket anyway!

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 18/12/2022 16:44

girlmom21 · 18/12/2022 15:35

I don't understand how the supermarkets haven't mastered this yet!

Haven't mastered what?

They can't control supply chain issues, egg shortages, issues with Ukrainian supplied items or what customers in store but before the picker gets to the shelf

If there was a perfect affordable way to supply all online orders of course it would have been introduced, the system is the best it can be on the whole but everyone knows it's not perfect.

girlmom21 · 18/12/2022 16:46

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair they know what supply issues there are, obviously. They should make those things unavailable online.

They know what stock levels they have.

Unifolorn · 18/12/2022 16:47

Roses always sell out here before the others, that's the one thing I buy as soon as they come out! I imagine it's been a weird year for supermarkets to try and predict what they're doing to sell along with the supply issues. That said shelves are full here and some places- co op and sainsburys, already have lots of Christmas food reduced so guessing they have loads.

Redglitter · 18/12/2022 16:49

The weekend is never a good time to do online groceries. Just because it's out of stock today doesn't mean you won't get it. They'll be getting a ton of stuff in for this weeks orders. Wait til nearer the time & check again

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 18/12/2022 16:56

Knowing what stock levels they have when you place your order isnt the issue. They can't know what will be on the shelf when the picker goes round getting the order

How do you suggest they solve that issue?

Hazbeen · 18/12/2022 15:24

I don’t understand why I can’t get a tin of roses?! It’s surely a Christmas basic 🤔do they not pick the stock from the local store? I see staff pulling off the shelves in my local store.

Some stores, including Tesco in certain places, use dark stores, these are warehouses where the public do not go and some pull orders from the shop floor.
All will have issues with availability as supplies inevitably let them down a bit and also sometimes they send one thing in labelled as a another.
The problem with shopping from the shop floor is that they cannot guarantee what will be shopped by the general public so they might well sell out.
Ocado exclusively use dark stores (as they have no shops) and generally their availability is better as the system reserves the item for you when you place the order, however if the supplier has a supply chain issue the items ocado ordered from them might not arrive and you get a substitution or a missing item

deplorabelle · 18/12/2022 18:58

How many Christmas things are actually essential for you really? When I used to get online shops I took the view I was paying for the convenience of not setting foot in a supermarket the week before Christmas so anything that didn't come I'd just do without or improvise a substitute. The bird was on order at the farm shop. Everything else was pretty optional (given I always have potatoes etc in anyway)

Now we can't afford online shopping so go in person to discount supermarkets where things are cheaper but stock levels are even more unpredictable and you have to brave the shop floor yourself.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 18/12/2022 19:00

They cancelled my order due to the snow now I can’t get a slot till Jan 3rd
