To ask why animal rights activists are targetting high-end restaurants and not the cheap chains?

Just that really.
Please enlighten.

Probably because the publicity is greater if it is a high end restaurant. More likely to believe they will get global, or US headlines.
Probably hypocrisy too, as many seem to be over privileged rich brats kicking against mummie and daddie, whom they know will mail them out and pay their fines.
Also kicking against “The Man” - hunt dabs never go against hare coursers, rabbit snares - more double standards and hypocrisy.

Unescorted · 18/12/2022 07:29

Trainbear the hunt sabs I know target badger baiting, raptor poisoning, remove snare traps, padlock access gates and run across hare course and grouse / pheasant shoots .. None are middle class kids rebelling against their parents.

Publicity

Lilyhatesjaz · 18/12/2022 08:48

They do go to the cheap chains. Recently they were protesting at my local macdonalds but this didn't get any publicity

These hobby activists are too thick to know how systems work and how change happens. And of course they have no interest in actually bringing about any change, this hobby is designed to inflate their moral self worth, that’s all.

'In my day' the only protesters I saw were outside McDonald's.
As a vegetarian whose working class family went there because it was what we could afford it made me feel uncomfortable.

Sadly, I think it's a bit counter productive as the only people who will actually feel guilty are people who already are making changes themselves. Everyone else just gets defensive.
As a veggie, I have a rule where I never answer people's questions about why I do it over food or before they eat. If I am honest, it's likely to put them off their food. If I like, it sounds wishy washy and something I am not really committed to.
Sadly, any restaurant that serves animal products will have ethics issues, so it's best just to ignore it because people enmasse have decided they are ok with that. I'm not going to change their minds.

Glad they're spreading it out to the rich people now though.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/12/2022 09:38

They've noticed that XR got a huge amount of flak for fucking over poor people trying to get to their low paid jobs when they superglued themselves to trains?

Either that or they're posh kids who wouldn't want to risk upsetting the customers outside a MaccyD's in case they received a response from a Mum with hungry children that doesn't give a shiny about a video being uploaded to TikTok.

AclowncalledAlice · 18/12/2022 09:43

When ARA's and vegans stop attending/playing (looking at you McCartney, Coldplay etc), at Glastonbury and start targeting it instead, then I might take them seriously.

Is that you Suella?

mumda · 18/12/2022 10:13

Because posh people are too polite to punch their lights out. If they went to Newton heath McDonald's they'd meet their match very quickly.

Quite, a bit like the JSO idiots who broke down in tears when they got screamed at by people and hauled bodily off the roads where they were blocking people getting to work and in one case even ignored a paramedic asking them to move which really brought out the angry bystanders!

Incredibly ironic statement. Clearly it's you who is "too thick to know how systems work". They're better off targeting high-end restaurants because:

  • High-end restaurants care about their reputation being trashed.
  • High-end restaurants care about client experience and atmosphere.
  • Food that's considered "good" starts off in the top level and filters down, so if they switched to vegan then the trend would filter down.
  • It gets more press attention.
  • They're more likely to reach influential people who eat at those restaurants.
  • They usually have individual decision-making power (unlike McDonalds or KFC) so have the ability to change their own menu.
Whether you agree with their cause or not, it makes nothing but good sense to target the expensive restaurants.

100% This

Dotjones · 18/12/2022 10:33

Because nobody would notice a bunch of scruffy young people hanging around McDonald's shouting and getting in the way.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 18/12/2022 10:34

I assumed it was because high end restaurants are more likely to:
Only use the decent cuts of meat and chuck the rest (whereas things like nuggets use all the chicken, feet and all)
Sell food associated with cruel practices like foie gras and veal. However the low end restaurants will use factory farmed meat which would also fall into this category
So maybe its just publicity

LlynTegid · 18/12/2022 10:44

@mumda has it in one.

gogohmm · 18/12/2022 10:55

Because the likes of McDonald's have the staff and budget to have security guards, or the clout to get the police to act ... oh and their customers are more likely to counter protest at these so called activists aka push past them and tell them to get lost!

When these activists stop taking "eco tourism" holidays overseas and stop eating almonds, avocados, imported green beans etc then i will listen to them about carbon footprint - until then I will enjoy my roast lamb today (from a hill farm 30 miles away) and my vegetables grown within 5 miles of my house. Really looking forward to my treatGrin
