To be sick of people talking about 'this virus' or 'this bug'

Needthisjob · 17/12/2022 21:48

We live in a big ass world so when people say things like 'has anyone else got this bug/virus' it fills me with irrational rage. There are hundreds of illnesses out in the world at any one time. You probably don't have the same one as a random stranger you are chatting to online.

People love the drama especially since covid

takealettermsjones · 20/12/2022 12:25

Isn't it just small talk? If we all responded to throwaway comments like this by saying, "well actually, that's scientifically illiterate" we wouldn't get many party invites. 🤣

Dinnerdate1 · 20/12/2022 12:26

I've asked only as I've never known a cold to last 7 weeks. It's really fucking annoying now. It's spreading back and forth and the minute you think it's gone.
It comes back the next day worse than before.
My kids have had to have so many days off due to it as well and plans ruined.

CoxixSix · 20/12/2022 12:26

'The bug going around'

YANBU

stayathomer · 20/12/2022 12:29

Fair enough if you’re not in the same county for example but if you’re in the same are then I think yabu. (At home with son and are both vomiting. We’ve had cramps 2 days now, hugs to everyone else feeling crap💖)

ShoveAHollySprigUpYourBum · 20/12/2022 12:32

Lol.

I always think that when I see a 'Does anyone else have this bug that's going around?' thread.

You're in Swansea, love. Amanda that's responding to you is in Ploppington under Lyme on the other side of the UK. You might have different bugs!

TheyreOnlyNoodlesMichael · 20/12/2022 12:33

runforyourdog · 18/12/2022 14:32

Yes and also before Covid people would get a cold but they don't seem to get those now it's always 'a nasty virus'😂

Everybody gets "floored" now. You can't be grotty as fuck for a few days, you have to be floored.

StarDolphins · 20/12/2022 12:34

There are some repetitive topics on here that I don’t like/find boring so I just scroll post them & certainly nothing on here gives me the rage! Random strangers online causing rage. No!

BamBamBilla · 20/12/2022 12:44

It annoys me too but just from the title I know the thread is going to be full of nonsense so I don't open it.

But we used to be able to hide the topic in the menu options next to the subject line without having to go into the thread unti @MNHQ decided to remove that feature.

baffledcoconut · 20/12/2022 13:13

@Hazbeen me too. You have my sympathy. This is miserable.

FruitToast · 20/12/2022 13:25

Makes me irrationally angry too. Also while I'm at it, if I see another social media post of 'the GP misdiagnosed him with tonsillitis when it was actually strep A' I might just explode with irrational anger.

Cornettoninja · 20/12/2022 13:33

Change the subject and talk about something else? It’s not hard.

I get irritated by people moaning about subjects other people talk about like they’re expecting to be entertained by everyone else. 🤷‍♀️

Bluevases · 20/12/2022 16:40

FFS, people are just feeling rough and are seeking solidarity with those around them. They're not collating evidence for a paper in The Lancet. Give them a break.

onemouseplace · 20/12/2022 16:46

At least they are not all claiming to have the ‘flu’ when they have a slight cold. That really gets on my nerves.

Baconand · 20/12/2022 16:47

Hazbeen · 20/12/2022 11:50

Well I’m in the south east and I currently have a horrid bug. I’ve actually got a fever. I never get fevers. Sore throat. Skin hurts. Muscles hurt. Cough. And the worst headache ever. Day nurse not touching it.

I don’t know what it is but it’s not a cold and it can fuck off now.

Snap but in the East Mids. And 75% of our small office has it. I’m confident that our little outbreak is connected (and started with my DD) as we all went down a few days after our Xmas meal the day she was first ill.
But I imagine there is 1001 variants of a similar thing “out there” too.

It’s just like Covid but not Covid. But it’s absolutely vile and I am sad that it’s absolutely ruining the run up to Christmas for me as we have had to cancel everything again. Four shitty Christmas’s in a row (2019 had a newborn and couldn’t do much, Covid x2 and now this). Bastard bloody humbug

Q2C4 · 20/12/2022 16:53

NameChangeLifeChange · 17/12/2022 21:51

I agree. I also don’t get the whole ‘we need to start isolating’ ‘we need to start wearing masks’ attitude- surely this is just kicking the can down the road? We knew there would be bounce back infections after a lack of mixing due to covid, especially in small children (we are really feeling this was a nursery aged child who’s ill constantly). Surely this is a power through and build up that immune system time rather than going back to the very thing that left us all so susceptible to ‘these bugs’ now?!

I didn't think it was the case that am immune system needs to be exercised to build up strength, like a muscle. I thought it was more like a photo album, keeping a "picture" of all the bacteria & viruses it's dealt with. I'm no expert though - can any immunologists/ biologists on here confirm?

donttellmehesalive · 20/12/2022 16:57

My main irritation is people in rl saying 'I've done a test and it's not covid but who knows...' as they list all of their symptoms with a raised eyebrow, clearly implying that they've got covid but the million tests they've done are all wrong.

Nobody can just have a cough or a cold any more.

Needthisjob · 20/12/2022 19:28

Bluevases · 20/12/2022 16:40

FFS, people are just feeling rough and are seeking solidarity with those around them. They're not collating evidence for a paper in The Lancet. Give them a break.

But usually it's a cold and people should be strong enough to just get on with it.

OP posts:
Chaiandchocolate · 20/12/2022 21:09

Well at least posters have stopped saying it must be Covid and why haven’t you done a LFT/PCR…because there are no other bugs than Covid in existence don’t you know!

buckingmad · 20/12/2022 21:23

Needthisjob · 20/12/2022 19:28

its not “just” a cold. Colds are the worst! Can’t sleep, can’t breathe, pulled a muscle from coughing, headache, temperature.

I’ve had “just” a cold for 6 weeks now. It’s hideous!

YukoandHiro · 20/12/2022 21:33

Accurate! You are right to be irritated.

EarringsandLipstick · 20/12/2022 21:38

But you're not necessarily accurate! During winter there will always be dominant strains of certain viruses doing the rounds; when people say they have 'that dose' or 'that bug', they're generally correct - they have thar particular flu / cold variant that many others also have.

I really can't understand your rage!

Pootle40 · 20/12/2022 21:39

Snowflakes.

Not sure we'd all be hearing this pre Covid......

stayathomer · 20/12/2022 21:48

I love that the people giving out that people are assuming they’ve the same strain are lumping all sick people in together and saying all are making much ado about nothing!

Foxgluv · 20/12/2022 22:02

I can't either. It's a moot point. At least the OP understands it's irrational.
I'd find the need to be specific about whichever variant of a common virus you're carrying a bit more annoying.
