AIBU in thinking that cleaners who get any sort of Xmas gift from their clients are very fortunate?

I'm a cleaner, have long-standing clients, some of whom I've visited for over ten years. I hope that I'm valued as a good worker ( I'm told so ), yet only a very small percentage of my folk give a little extra indicative of the coming season. I'm ok with this as for the most part I don't think it occurs to them! Also of course, it's their choice. Do any other cleaners have a different view to this?

As for what I pay her, she is self employed. She sets her own fees and they are considerably above NMW.

My clenaer is £18.00 an hour. Which is more than I earn. I pay it happily becasue without her I would probably be divorced right now.

cristinayangstwistedsister · 19/12/2022 16:25

I buy her vouchers as she loves a pamper session but wouldn't fork out the money herself

cristinayangstwistedsister · 19/12/2022 16:26

I also pay her for the two weeks she is off over Christmas

Mentalpiece · 19/12/2022 16:28

I don't have a cleaner, I do have a dog walker though and I always get her a nice gift, plus a small selection box for each of her children.
I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't get someone they employ a Christmas gift, even if it's only a nice box of chocolates.

strawberriesarenot · 19/12/2022 16:30

When I said to dm she should give something to her cleaner at Christmas she said 'Oh no, she wouldn't want to take it.'

Britinme · 19/12/2022 17:20

I pay my cleaner $25 an hour and he comes once a month for four hours. I can't tell you the last time I saw my car mechanic. A very poor comparison, in my opinion.

troppibambini6 · 19/12/2022 17:32

I love my cleaners. They are an absolute god send. I give them a bottle of fizz and an extra weeks pay. I want them to know how much I appreciate their work.

Cleaners usually turn up on a regular basis - daily, weekly or monthly depending on the job. They don't generally earn a high wage and they are in somebody's personal spaces. I see my car mechanic maybe once or twice a year and the charge for those services is somewhat higher than most cleaners earn so I doubt whether anyone tips for that.

Dunno about "low paid" - round where I live the going rate is £18+ per hour. Not sure a car mechanic earns that much more. Certainly supermarket workers, carers or TA's don't.

Because you don't "employ" a cleaner unless you've got them on payroll. You pay for a service, same as when you get your nails done, have your car fixed, order a pizza, etc.

poshme · 21/12/2022 12:52

I paid my cleaner for Christmas week even though she isn't coming - that's her Christmas present.

NantsIngonyamaBagithiBaba · 21/12/2022 13:33

I'm SE, as is my cleaner. I don't tip or give her a bonus, and she doesn't give me them either.
That said, I charge her significantly less for the work I do on her, so all that discounted work adds up.

Dailymash · 21/12/2022 13:47

I gave a small gift / cash to my hairdresser, my daughters teacher and our postie.

Yes they ‘already get paid to do a job’.
No ‘I don’t get tips for doing my job’.
But it’s a small token of appreciation to people who do something for me on a regular basis and I wanted to show that I value that.

As it is I can’t afford a cleaner but if I could I would be getting them a Christmas gift.

I think you're comparing two different types of service.

Having someone come into your home on a daily/weekly basis for a year isn't really the same as taking your car to a garage every 12 months for a service and MOT.

I always give a Christmas gift to my cleaners

Sounds like you have good luck with cars. I wish I was just going every 12 months for a service and MOT! My garage is excellent though, happy to fit me in and check when something isn't right, advise if it's a safety issue or will cause further damage or if it can wait, they don't charge me for their time checking the car either.

If someone is having a cleaner come daily then I expect they are very well off and an extra week's pay is not an issue. It is for my DGM who has a cleaner fortnightly, though her cleaner has many elderly clients and doesn't expect to be paid extra.

Sloth66 · 21/12/2022 20:38

Double pay at Christmas plus a present. We appreciate her , she works hard and deserves it.

Blendandmix · 21/12/2022 20:44

Ive ordered my cleaner a pamper hamper. Ive always got her a birthday and Xmas present. She gives us presents too.
