To start wearing a face mask

I have been constantly ill since the past couple of months picking up every single bug going. Just occurred to me that during the facemask years I never picked up anything, so would it be silly to start wearing one ? No one is wearing them anymore but I am so sick of being constantly ill and having to be off work.

I wore one yesterday as my hairdresser still asks clients to do so.
I loved how warm my face was and wore it till I got back to my car!

I'm still wearing one everyday on the bus to work. It's packed, the windows are steamed up, everyone's coughing & blowing their nose. It just make me feel a little better.

I have just been off work last week with covid, it’s been awful. I couldn’t get out of bed. It was so bad I couldn’t get my kids 10/12 up for school and drive then in. Realistically they could have got themselves up. My breathing is still bad. Back at work Monday, I’ll prob wear a mask for a few days just in case I pass anything on. Busy warehouse, quite close Working to one another

I still wear an FFP3 mask in shops and public transport. No one has called me a weirdo and mine is space age with a valve. I have not been sick for a very long time.

Choconut · 17/12/2022 18:05

We still wear them on planes, the one time we got covid was on a plane not wearing a mask.

Winter41 · 17/12/2022 18:13

I still wear one whenever I am indoors and not at home. Needs to be ffp2/3 to offer you decent protection. In my experience it seems to work. I work in a large school and commute on packed public transport and have never caught anything whilst wearing my mask.

So what makes you comfortable, so long as you bear in mind that this will lower your immune system .

araiwa · 17/12/2022 18:18

I've been wearing masks all week as I've been full of cold

Each to their own, which works both ways.

ScarlettSunset · 17/12/2022 18:24

I still wear one on the train. It has the added advantage of keeping my face warm while I'm waiting for it.
There usually one or two others in the carriage wearing one, though most people don't. No one bats an eye whether people do or don't here.

MajorCarolDanvers · 17/12/2022 18:24

I see people wearing them every day.

You don't need MNs permission

user2859453 · 17/12/2022 18:29

I think I might have to wear one on Monday to go to the hairdressers, I had a bad cold last week which is better now but I have now got 3 big glorious cold sores between my nose and mouth which I would rather not have on show

Yeah that's not true but thanks for playing!

OddBoots · 17/12/2022 18:37

I know this is slightly different to what you are staying but I'm feeling I get a benefit to wearing a cloth mask outside, I realise this doesn't have the protective factor of an FFP2 or 3 mask but it does keep my nose warmer and some studies have shown that infections take hold more easily if your nose gets cold.

Even if that isn't the case it is much more comfortable in this really cold snap.

CrazyBiscuits · 17/12/2022 18:40

Why care if people call u a weirdo? I've noticed a few people in shoos wearing than and tend to consider whether I should do the same. Better a well weirdo than an ill not-weirdo!

Live in London, have never stopped wearing one on the tube because it is a Petri dish of disgusting.
It took Covid to realise that this could protect me from the vast array of airborne illnesses. Okay I did ditch them in the super heat wave because breathing was slightly more of a priority (vs melting). I don't love wearing a mask but I am happier with one.

BeyondMyWits · 17/12/2022 19:24

I wear a mask at the moment. Covid is rife again, and flu, and StrepA/tonsilitis/scarlet fever etc. I work in a pharmacy so we see it all daily, and I don't want any of it for Christmas.

I have had covid twice... once when customers stopped having to wear masks... then when we staff stopped. So I have started again. Not many really judge, I get an occasional "ridiculous" (from the usual suspects) but everyone has their own health fears to manage, especially when coming to a pharmacy. Wear a mask when you feel you need to... I do.

That's ok then. I don't have a working one anyway

Theraffarian · 17/12/2022 20:04

Wear one if it makes you feel more comfortable. Personally working in town , I now assume the majority of people wearing one have covid so try and give them a wide berth .

WarriorN · 18/12/2022 07:02

Agree with pp that face mask wearing is more to prevent yourself from speeding - Asian countries have done this for years. No idea why we didn't understand this.

I would though maybe get vit d checked and take a high strength spray.

Was quite surprised how hard it is to raise vit d levels after doing two tests this year.

WarriorN · 18/12/2022 07:03

I'm seeing loads wearing them but barely register it now.
