That suggested that nurses should not get a pay rise as it a calling, not a way of earning money! They therefore deduced that strike action is morally incorrect!

They don't call it the torygraph for nothing.

I am rubbish with technology so not sure how to attach a link.

I haven't read the article but I suspect there's a lot of people who see it as a women's job that they do for pin money whilst being supported by their husbands. Therefore they don't see a need for it to pay a living wage.

It's the same for any job that involves caring and looking after young children or elderly people.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 17/12/2022 09:35

Bonkers. By that logic any job involving an element of public service should be done on a voluntary basis and those who do them should simply bask in the warm glow of their selflessness to survive. But I suspect as the last poster said, this "logic" is from a patriarchal stance because men do important money making work while women support them and everyone else because "nature" or some such bollocks.

Bottom line is if the jobs that keep the country running don't pay enough to support those who do them then the economy needs restructuring before the country implodes and we end up in the fucking Hunger Games.

Sorry for the strong language but I'm extremely concerned by the destabilisation and division being actively engineered in this country and internationally. At which point will our overlords offer us a get out in the form of a regime that comes with strings attached that will ultimately prove unpalatable?

If you are unable to attach a link then please name the journalist who wrote the article. I’ve just had a look at the DT website and can’t locate the piece to which you refer.

I think anyone who goes into nursing must surely do so already knowing it is a depressingly underpaid profession that probably isn't going to earn them a comfortable living.

SnowlayRoundabout · 17/12/2022 10:12

I wonder how many Telegraph readers are doctors who wouldn't dream of drawing their pay because it's a calling.

A lot of us went into the profession before the recent decade of pay cuts. I never expected nursing to make me rich, but I did expect to be paid enough to live.

Chisquared · 17/12/2022 10:18

I've been a nurse for 40 years and believe me, pay was not always terrible for nurses. It has slid considerably in the last 10 years with successive under inflation pay awards and public sector pay freezes. Its a bit simplistic to say nurses 'know' its an underpaid profession. And if something is not done soon to address recruitment and retention, working conditions then, no there won't be any nurses left. Then things really will be a mess.
I think @MistressoftheDarkSide has it spot on.

unpocamasporfavor · 17/12/2022 10:33

It's fucking ridiculous, isn't it?

I've seen similar said about doctors recently over the issues with pensions / pay.

And charity workers.

Mind you, I also remember seeing comments about how being an MP should be voluntary. Now I'm not in anyway comparing MPs and nurses. But it's scary how some people just genuinely don't understand that the NHS, charities etc need people with high levels of skill for which they need and deserve to be paid a decent wage. With MPs, if it was voluntary or just paid a stipend, only the rich and privileged could do it which would be terrible for democracy.

Please don't see my comments as whataboutary. I just find it genuinely scary that some members of the general public genuinely feel this way.

I'm a civil servant and find the Telegraph slating us in opinion pieces almost weekly now. It's becoming as bad as the red tops.

Alibabasonethief · 17/12/2022 14:16

But isn’t that just putting words on right wing politics though.

“There are those of use who deserve to earn lots through luck of birth or circumstances and then they are others who deserve to care for us when we are ill and to do the labour for us that earns us the money. And that is what makes us all happy. Doesn’t it?? And if that doesn’t make you happy then you are the one with the problem”

Valeriekat · 17/12/2022 19:43

Bloody hell! I know a lot of religious orders worked in nursing and teaching but they take vows of poverty chastity and obedience!
Could it have been irony? (Please)
