To be furious about ever changing Teacher?!

My DC joined swimming lessons early last year in a group setting. They didn’t make alot of progress as it was 5 in a group and need dedicated focus.

I moved DC to 1:1 lessons which are double the price after commenting to the lead instructor that DC was not making progress- literally not moving.

In a term of 8 lessons (missed one due to illness) DC has had 5 different teachers as the head instructor said DC’s main teacher was ill with an infection.
I complained at least 4 times and was told DC was being taught the same thing which I rejected as different things were being taught with each new teacher. I mentioned with the cost of the lessons this is unfair and because of them initially struggling they need structure and consistency.
Last week DC was ill, this week is the last lesson of the term the teach again is different (it was the first teach in the group session he struggled with). They did a couple lengths for just under 15mins (lessons are 30mins). Then DC joined the GROUP class and did a couple of races. DC’s instructor was helping other kids whilst my DC was swimming by themselves.

AIBU to be furious?! The kids in the group session pay less that half of what I pay and today the session was 2 instructors to 5 kids. I know is Christmas and end of term but I am not paying this much to mess around in the water.

I think they have a set plan or focus?
Water confidence, fun as well as learning to swim.
Guess it depends on do you want an Olympic swimmer or budget clubs.
How fast shall a child progress and learn is my unknown.
I wouldn't be furious between covid, life now days.
I have spent a lot of swimming at a slower rate of learning without compliant it is a vital life skill after all.
Teach them yourself or find another school.

last Week if term is normally a fun session where we are. Having fun in the pool
bosts confidence and enjoyment in the learning process. How old is your child? How often do you take them swimming outside of lessons to help practice what they’ve been learning? Might be more cost effective for group lessons and more family swims.
yes ever changing teachers is annoying,( but I imagine a job which involves being in water/ on a hot poolside plays havoc with your immune system.) does your swim school have an online progress tracker so the teacher knows where your child is at?

If your not happy then change providers. Last lesson of the term is always a fun lesson. Swimming should be fun. Kids learn better if they are enjoying it.

Make sure you take your child swimming at least once a week, they don’t have to do anything specific. Just play in the water.

You've tried repeatedly and they haven't resolved it to your satisfaction. Time to cancel (or at least not renew) and either find somewhere else or just give it a break for a while until original teacher is back. It won't harm the kids to be not swimming in the January term anyway and you could use it as a positive opportunity to be doing something you don't usually have the time or money to do?

RedHelenB · 17/12/2022 08:59

They main thing is your d's sees swimming and being in the water as fun. You sound very uptight given her age.

DC is 9 we have had 1 other bad experience with other teachers in gym setting.

@Whatisthegoss they claimed there is plan but it was not being followed one teacher would take DC to do half lengths in the mid depth of the pool other would make DC do full lengths to the deepest depths of the pool. No structure. DC needs a strict structure as they tend to be distracted by little things.

We haven’t gone adhoc swimming in the last few months will pick back up soon.

Change place / provider . I had this when my DD first started lessons . 6 lessons ...4 with different teachers . Never made any progress . Was told this leisure centre was bad for staff turnover / lack of progression.

We moved to leisure centre in next town and it was completely different. Much more well organised and in the 4 years my DD was there she only had an absent instructor twice and the replacement was great .

DD flourished there and she's 9 now and has finished the lesson programmes.

Stop wasting your money there .

Pineapplep · 17/12/2022 09:46

@ExplodingCarrots thank having a consistent teacher is not uncommon the other group
lessons have had the same teacher every week and I don’t think I have ever seen a replacement.

Will take your advice and move to a new swim school.

Furious seems an overreaction.

Changing where your DC has swimming lessons would be reasonable.

SnowlayRoundabout · 17/12/2022 10:08

one teacher would take DC to do half lengths in the mid depth of the pool other would make DC do full lengths to the deepest depths of the pool. No structure. DC needs a strict structure as they tend to be distracted by little things.

To be honest, I'm struggling to see what is the problem with that - it's all swimming whether they do full or half lengths and irrespective of the depth of the water.

itsgettingweird · 17/12/2022 10:19

At the learning to swim stage they should be focussing on stroke - starting free and back. They should be teaching the drills and building through the stroke each session from start to end.

They should also be playing games such as chasing and collecting items floating and from bottom of the pool as all this focuses on the FUN dementials of swimming and the skills needed to swim.

The depth and distance is irrelevant as long as they can swim the distance given. The technique is what counts.

I wouldn't worry about things such as change of teacher as long as the basics are being taught. I also would think it's great they've included them in the fun gala last session.

My ds is a swimmer and trains with a national squad. They'll still have stupid races the last session 🤣 unfortunately it's still a 7am swim session on a Saturday - on Xmas Eve!
