According to some people on twitter the university of London is going to be starting a redundancy process for around 50 staff on Monday. Aibu to think that it’s not acceptable to do this to staff and there families so close to Christmas?

My OH had this at Bradford university 3 years ago he did fortunately get a good redundancy package and was one year off retirement age so he retired a bit earlier than he intended

So the pre Xmas ones, are they voluntary?

my voluntary redundancy was fab - took a lot of negotiating and I think they were genuinely surprised at some of us who responded to the call, but when it's voluntary, it's such a different experience to compulsory.

Is Birbeck really "some of the country's best humanities departments?"

murasaki · 16/12/2022 17:54

Second in Ref for English....

Consistently top 10 for history, not my field, but yes, there are pockets of excellence

Yes, it has really excellent humanities departments.

I thought they had already had a voluntary redundancy round?

Several. Two at least this one is less generous than the last two if you haven't been there for ever....

And some of the most influential film studies people in the field.

Redundancies are often just before Christmas, I have been made redundant 4 times and I think they were all then.

As it's Christmas, most uni staff will not be working hence the employers are possibly thinking that a couple of weeks at home will allow staff time to find alternative positions.

It's not nice but it's probably more practical for academic staff. Same for Easter.
