How much are you spending day? I live in a normal 1960s semi all modernised with modern gas central heating, new upvc windows and good insulation. Heating is off all night. It’s on 19 degrees from 7am to 8pm so only ticking over on and off after initial morning warm up. Daily use on smart meter is around £15 in this cold weather is that normal? Or can i check meter is charging the right amount? Our house is never as warm as we had it before as we used to have it on 20.5. I turn heating off/ down if we’re all out. It just seems really expensive!

I don't know but I'm also worried. I was lucky enough in the past not to worry and had heating st 20+ whenever I wanted. Circumstances have changed and we have the thermostat at 15 which takes the chill off but it is cold.
But as we are on 6month bills I have no idea what we are using

Wineiscooling · 15/12/2022 19:43

Mine is 25 pounds today - but that’s the most it’s been it’s just so cold and didn’t seem to warm up for ages. Heating has been on since 7am! We were budgeting to keep it below 20 a day in December as we had a lot of credit and that’s the first time it’s been over 20 it’s been around 15 pounds to 18 since beginning of December. I have an old 19th century house, probably bad insulation and high ceilings.

My gas today. One hour. 200yr old house, 3 beds, live alone, home all day as I'm disabled and unable to work.

I'm wearing five layers, a hat, gloves, two pairs of socks and still shivering.

There are few threads running. Plus some good advice

2 bed detached house, family of 3
WFH, tumble drying and cooking etc
£3 a day on electricity
£10 a week on gas (central heating & water)

I'm on prepayment so quite aware of our spending. Haven't cut back but we downsized in 2020 after furlough made us realise we didn't want a big mortgage anymore.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 15/12/2022 19:54

£15 a day. Large Victorian 3 bed. Heating on at 21 degrees during the day

catgirl1976 · 15/12/2022 19:55

I’ve spent £20 on gas today. I’ve had the hearing on 18 degrees since 9am. It’s a fortune but I’m freezing and I’m hoping tomorrow is the last really really cold day so I can go back to more like half that or less

WaddleAway · 15/12/2022 19:56

We’re currently on about £11 a day but in the fortunate position of being on a cheap fix until April. We have to have the heating on all day due to the needs of my disabled child. Dreading next winter.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 15/12/2022 19:59

Between £15-£20 since this cold snap started. Before that it was on between 5am and 8.30am and 4.30pm to 8.30pm and about £12 a day.
Since the really cold weather its been on 6am to 8.30pm at 17.5 to 18.5 deg depending on how cold I am feeling.
5 bed detached 1930s. Good ishaltukm but draught chimneys.

stripedknickers · 15/12/2022 19:59

About £1.50 per day for gas & electricity.
Heating on pretty much all day.

I live in the EU...

TheSmallAssassin · 15/12/2022 20:01

This is ours from the day before yesterday, £12.48 on gas. I turned it back on in the morning and set it to 18 as we were both off sick at home, then it turns up to 19 at about 3pm.

We pay by monthly direct debit, and it's telling us that we're OK to pay £200 a month still, and that will be based on last year's usage when we were working from home more, so I am not massively cutting down.

@Bellavida99 Our house is similar to yours. Our daily rate is averaging £20 but has been as high as £27.

We've been relying on our smart meter to help us keep costs down but got a bit of a shock when we checked on the app. Huge discrepancy between the two and sadly the app is the correct one. Smart meter was saying daily costs were below £10, so £27 was a bit scary.

thebellagio · 15/12/2022 20:05

Ours is the same. We have a 1970 4bed detached. Brand new boiler and brand new windows this year. Thermostat set to 16 and it’s still coming in at £14-15 per day.

we have noticed that the insulation means the temp takes a long time to drop so the last few days we’ve turned the heating off between 10-3 and coped with wearing double layers/hat while working from home and the price was coming in at about £10 per day

so I think that’s what we’ll have to do to be about £300pm rather than £450pm

Fallulah · 15/12/2022 20:11

2 bed mid terrace built in the 80s.
About £4 on gas and almost £2 on electric in this cold snap. The heating is off overnight, on for an hour in the morning and about 4ish hours in the evening. Plus hot water coming on twice a day. That’s week days; weekends is more.
