Is there a cut off for payroll?

Hi! If you have an employee, is there a cut off in the month that you have to submit their over time / hours by?
If there is, if you miss this deadline, what is the consequence? Or can you simply not submit until the following payroll month?

I am an employee who submitted overtime in time but it was not passed on to the accountant and I'm now trying to work out if I can going to get this payment as a one off before Xmas or if it will be included in my December payslip.

RTI submissions have to be made on or before the date the employee is paid. We can be fined if they are not. We can't make any changes after the RTI submission is made. We run a weekly payroll as well as a monthly one so our submissions are very week.

What is RTI?
Yes I have heard about fines for late submission before. Once I submitted late and they said it needed to be paid the following month, which I was fine with but this month was submitted early and I really was banking on the extra for Christmas. X

I run 50 payrolls a month and I'd either reprocess the payroll - which takes me 60 seconds - or I'd put it on next months to be taxed but get the employer to give you an advance roughly equal to the net amount now which is deducted from next months net pay.

I do the same, a few dozen payrolls for very small employers (typically 1-2 employees). We have no problem at all in making changes and submitting new RTI submissions with correct figures when an employer/employee has made a mistake. Literally a 2 minute job. I really don't understand why so many employers/payroll bureax make such a big deal out of it. I can only assume they're using some convoluted/antiquated software that hasn't been programmed to be flexible. But that's their problem in choosing the wrong software rather than the employee's problem.

It stands for Real Time Information. It means that you have to submit figures to HMRC via the payroll software on or before the date the employee is paid. In the past firms only used to send the information monthly or even quarterly and it was subject to abuse.

I use Payroll Manager. Sage was far too expensive.

It is a bit of a faff to do a special run when you need to liaise with an outsourced payroll processor. If it was our fault and we could make a rough estimate of the amount we would probably give you an advance instead and do the actual payroll processing in January.

Thank you. I think this is the situation. My employers are really lovely but I work within the home. They are both so busy at work, I think it got forgotten and now tricky to arrange with their account. X

It's not tricky at all - they should just send their accountant a quick email to tell them to change the amount.

It may not be easy but if it's mistake, then they need to suck it up!

Well I think it's an "advance" rather than an actual advance. I.e. it should already have been paid but it hasn't so it's not a true advance, it's just an advance compared to the next payroll date.

Why is an advance not easy?

You transfer the sum and note it on the payroll control ledger and process next month.

Exceptionally easy.

It’s not always easy because you have to guesstimate the tax & NI which might alter depending on various factors.

@Comefromaway that’s not difficult. It only needs to be approximate as it’ll be sorted on the next run.

If you’re processing payroll as a job taking a quick calc of 20% for tax and 13% NI and round down would take seconds.

Really? Sounds like they disapproved of your overtime to me. Hardly difficult to pass on details of extra hours

Cut off 1 week before payday for us
Standard process for quicker payment if basic salary has been missed
Any additional payments would normally be the following pay unless approval to be fast tracked

It can be done you will just need someone to agree to doing it

How much is it?
