When a doctor says....

That they don't think there is anything to worry about, are you able to relax a bit? Worried about a family member. Had a lump on his leg for years, only got it checked a few weeks back. GP said she didn't think it was anything to worry about but sent him for a scan anyway. Anxiety is kind of going into overdrive still though...

Yes, I do believe doctors. If they say it’s unlikely to be anything serious they mean it. DH has had a couple of CAT scans and it hasn’t been anything.

Moon22 · 14/12/2022 21:31

Yes I believe the doctor. If they are worried, they are well on the ball with a speedy referral.
Try not to google!!

UsingChangeofName · 14/12/2022 21:35

Yes, I believe a Doctor who says that.
Though generally, I work on the thinking it is not worth worrying until you know there is something to worry about.

Not sure what you are asking if YABU or not about ?

Teaandcrumpets95 · 14/12/2022 21:36

I do find it reassuring when a doctor says they don't think it's serious- they have no reason to lie and it's best to get things checked rather than worry.

I've had a few things in the past that I've had checked/ scanned for and they've always been fine, so I would try to relax a little bit and be glad it's being looked into.

If anything I tell myself not to worry until I ^ Know^ there's something to worry about. Otherwise all I do is stress myself out.

SunsetsInVenice · 14/12/2022 21:40

Thanks all, this has helped.
Just worried if I am being unreasonable for thinking that she could be wrong

I think it's natural to worry either way.
When do they get the scan results? Hopefully it's not a long wait.

Newwardrobe · 14/12/2022 21:53

Where on the leg is the lump and are they having an ultrasound?

Kentlassie · 14/12/2022 21:56

Yes. They won’t pretend it’s ok, they will be upfront and honest.

hotchocolate6 · 14/12/2022 21:57

I had a chat about this exact thing with my GP recently. I have health anxiety, and he is a really great GP who understands. He said that obviously doctors can never be 100% infallible as they are human. However there has to be a level of trust between the doctor and the patient, because they only want to help you and they absolutely do not want to miss something or get it wrong. So it's unlikely they will say it's nothing to worry about unless they're really pretty sure about that.

I think they refer for things sometimes just to be completely sure, and because it's best practice, not because they're in any way concerned it's something sinister.

SunsetsInVenice · 14/12/2022 21:58

Just having a scan is all I know
Not sure when the results come back

BaileySharp · 14/12/2022 21:59

Yeah I think that means it's probably fine but they will do the job properly just in case and get it scanned so a specialist can check

FOJN · 14/12/2022 22:01

Yes I believe doctors when they offer reassurance.

I had some investigations following abnormal blood results once and my GP was very keen to make sure I knew what the worst case scenario was, he said, "you do realise it could be cancer"! Fortunately I was aware and I'm not prone to health anxiety or worrying about things before they happen.

I think it very unlikely they would minimise something of they thought it was serious.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/12/2022 22:03

If the lump has been there for years already, it stands to reason that it's nothing serious.

SunsetsInVenice · 14/12/2022 22:05

Been there 8 years but still doesn't completely reassure me neither does the doctors words but I am a very anxious person anyway so I know I need to try and keep calm

In my experience doctors will tell you if it's something to worry about.

Newwardrobe · 14/12/2022 22:10

I bet it's a lipoma which is just a lump of fat, especially as it's been there for years. I hope they get the results soon, try not to worry.

hattie43 · 14/12/2022 22:20

If the lump has been there for years without changes I wouldn't worry tbh .

SunsetsInVenice · 15/12/2022 22:17

Thanks for the responses all x

Yeah I would trust that when my mum had something the doctor said straight away I really don’t like the look of that .

hellgirl · 15/08/2023 18:21

Hi

Do you know the result? x
