Bigger issue to Americans than everyone else?

We’ve all seen the conversations about cultural appropriation being more called out in recent years. I see a lot of it on TikTok complaining about people not eating with their hands when eating food traditionally eaten like that in its origin country or hair styles ‘belonging’ to black women.

it’s had me thinking, I’ve not known an ‘African American’ woman but I have known many African women who are always keen to share their culture. One of them braided my hair when I was young. She willingly did this. My family was also friends with a Sri Lankan family who we befriended after they moved here seeking asylum. The mum loved putting us in her saris and would even do this to my mum.

It just seems like it’s Americans who are African-American or Asian-American etc who like to gatekeep but everyone I’ve known actually from Asian countries or African countries LOVE to share their culture. AIBU to think this way?

Disclaimer: I don’t think people should walk around in say Native American head dress. I’m talking specifically about Americans who claim cultural appropriation that isnt viewed that way in the country the culture originates.

Yes to me it's a very American thing. Never personally encountered it anywhere else.

Newrumpus · 14/12/2022 21:18

And it would surely be cultural appropriation if it was copied by others outside of the USA.

It's all bullshit. Nobody can tell anyone else to eat with their hands or not. You may have your hair styled however you wish. Nobody owns a hairstyle.
I have had friends of many different cultures and all have been quite happy to share and enjoy each others food/customs etc.
There is too much division in the world already. Why do people wish to go out of their way to add to it?

Yea it blows my mind.

Anyone I know from a different culture to mine, loves sharing it and encourages others to get involved/try things from their culture.

There are actual problems in the world. Why the fuck are so many people complaining about this shite🙄
