To keep DS off school for rest of week

DS has started with a high temp this evening 38.6. It has come down with calpol and nurofen but then it’s creeping back up when the next dose is due. He is otherwise well and isn’t ill other than a sniffly nose and slight cough.
It’s his birthday party on Sat and I really don’t want to have to cancel it as 1. He will be heartbroken and 2. I’ve paid £160 and it’s non-refundable.
AIBU to keep him off school tomorrow and Friday even though other than a temp he is otherwise well?
Keeping him off would mean myself or my husband having to take days off work.

WWYD?

Would you be keeping him off because you think he's too ill for school or because you want to throw him a party on Sat that you want him well for?

CrowInTheSnow · 14/12/2022 19:53

I would keep a child off anyway if they have a high temperature.

Hope he feels better soon.

EllieRosesMammy · 14/12/2022 19:54

I'd see how he is overnight and in the morning and then go from there :) my DD who's 4 has been the same today, temp hit 39.5 and she's been teary and tired, but other than that she's not complained of anything. Weirdly enough it's also her birthday party this weekend😂 I'm just going to give her another dose of calpol in an hour, see how she is tonight and then if she's worse in the morning I'll keep her off x

OptimusPrime31 · 14/12/2022 19:54

Keep him off. He's got a temperature and deserves to be lying on the sofa not surrounded by noisy children. Also he could make someone else ill.

ChristmasTidyings · 14/12/2022 19:54

If he has a temp of over 38, don't you have to keep him off until he's been normal temp for 24 hours anyway?

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 14/12/2022 19:55

Yes keep.him off . I'm in a primary school and I'm catching everything the pupils have because the parents send in their sick child. It's not fair and I'm expecting a chest infection over Christmas as many children are coughing, sneezing over me as they're clearly unwell

AnotherCountryMummy · 14/12/2022 19:55

Keep him off. It's unlikely they'll be doing anything too important this close to Xmas. Hope he gets better for the party!

Mydogatemypurse · 14/12/2022 19:58

He doesnt sound well. He needs that temp to come down and rest.

justasking111 · 14/12/2022 19:59

Just been to school Christmas concert. Lots of coughing, just praying it doesn't circulate too well in church.

I'd keep him off tomorrow for a duvet day then see

Thanks for the opinions. Yes I’m part I would be keeping him off cos I want him to enjoy his party but also I don’t want him giving this to anyone else. But on the other hand he doesn’t seem poorly which is why my judgement is clouded as to whether I take a day off work and keep him home when other than a temp he seems well enough to go to school.
Is it 24 hours after spiking a temp before they can go back in?
I will monitor him tonight and make a call in the morning.

If he has a fever he’s ill and shouldn’t be at school. The fact it responds to paracetamol is by the by.

WaddleAway · 14/12/2022 20:01

I’d keep him off because he’s clearly fighting something and will be miserable at school with a fever.

misskatamari · 14/12/2022 20:04

Id keep an eye on the temperature and see. If it’s that high, he’s obviously not well and I’d be tempted to keep him off. If the fever is still there tomorrow I’d definitely keep him home. If it was back to normal and he was completely fine, I’d consider sending but I don’t think you’d be unreasonable at all to keep him home. When they’re I’ll with a fever the best thing is a chance to rest so their bodies can fight off the infection.
