To ask who you talk to on the phone?

I keep seeing / hearing people in public having long chats on the phone. (Taxi drivers also seem to do this!).

I very very rarely phone people and if I do it’ll be to DH in the supermarket along the lines of ‘do we need butter? Ok, I’ll get some, bye’.

The world of long chatty phone calls is alien to me.

So if you phone people when you’re out and about, who do you speak to? What about?

(I’m not NT so sorry if it’s really obvious!)

I love a chat on the phone
Work colleagues, amazing what tangents we go off on while speaking without ears.
Parents, partner.
I love a chat out and about without little voices asking who it is on the phone.
Happy walking hormones cause me to be chatty.

ItsMeHiImTheProblem · 14/12/2022 20:23

My mum and my daughters.

Fiddledeedeeee · 14/12/2022 20:24

I speak to very few people on the phone - DP and I can talk for ages though. I’m more of a messager with my friends and family.

He on the other hand is a massive phone chatterer and has a regular set of friends that he talks to daily.

I read once that it’s an introvert/ extrovert thing and extroverts seek to fill every silence with calls. Certainly true of us! He’ll be on the phone to various people for every single car journey he makes alone.

I do talk to work colleagues a lot on the phone though about anything and everything 🤔

LlareggubTripAdviser · 14/12/2022 20:26

I think it's an age thing.. even if an issue is extremely urgent my 20 something dc will text... drives me potty..l just bloody phone them and use that weird communication tool you were born with - speech !!

I call DH and him me. My parents, close friends , family... I think text is so reductive of emotion and nuance , easily misconstrued .
Can easily lead to misunderstandings. Try just speaking.

I call my mum and dad every week or two for a chat. But that's it. DH if it's something quick or maybe longer if he is away with work for example. Hardly ever chat on the phone with friends, and never in public!

Tundrawave · 14/12/2022 20:28

My mum, colleagues if I need to chat and have popped out in the day, my dad, step mother, DH, Friends.

I LOVE a phone chat, talk to friends, my mum, my MIL. I have stuck with my lockdown habit of going for a long walk most days, and sometimes call MIL while I’m out, but I don’t really like having a long conversation out of the house, partly because I think people walking round on loud calls are dicks, and also because the reception around here dips in and out.

I talk to my sister every day. I’m not sure what we talk about, but sometimes it’s 5 mins and other times it’s 2 hours 😂

I also speak with a couple of my friends on the phone once or twice a week, but nearly all of my friends only WhatsApp.

Imafirework · 14/12/2022 23:25

My Mum, my sisters. We can talk for hours on the phone about nothing. Usually I have AirPods in and I'm either walking the dog or doing other things at the same time.
I use the phone a lot for work too so it seems natural.

stayathomer · 14/12/2022 23:28

I talk to my mum daily for about an hour either on my lunch break or when I’m off and my brother for about 15 minutes (he has as and we simply talk films). I have the best most hilarious conversations with my sis. Wish I lived close to all

nokidshere · 15/12/2022 02:18

I don't really chat to people on the phone when I'm out and about unless it's to ask DH & DSs if they need anything/want a lift etc.

But I spend loads of time on the phone at home, mostly FaceTime or messenger, with one or all of my 5 sisters and mum. We don't talk about anything in particular though. I've just put the phone down on my sister in USA and we've been chatting for almost 3 hours! If all 7 of us are in the same call it can last a while! We can talk about what we had for dinner to the latest political scandal to something new that we've bought to absolutely anything really, often all on the same call.

Occasionally I call my friends instead of texting but it's once a week or less.

Redglitter · 15/12/2022 02:25

My Mum, my brother, my niece & my best friend. I speak to my mum usually a couple of times a day, my best friend several times a week but for ridiculous lengths of time 🙈 My niece is at uni we have regular phone calls & my brother about once a week

Oliol · 15/12/2022 02:31

My mum, or practical/admin stuff, or DH or DC.

I've got a small circle of good friends, but none of us are chatting-on-the-phone types.

I hare talking on the phone, tbh.

Floralnomad · 15/12/2022 02:31

Before she died my mum , I also speak to one of my sisters everyday often more than once and my son rings me most evenings when he’s driving home from work . Less regularly I speak to a couple of old friends .

DeeCeeCherry · 15/12/2022 02:32

I chat to DP. & friends. Occasionally my adult DCs but they mostly use text. DP and my friends don't really use text we all prefer to speak. If you know people beyond your immediate family thats pretty normal I think
