AIBU to think EBay is full of scammers

I have put a load of things on EBay for sale. They are all quite expensive clothing/shoe items (Fairfax and Favour, Alexander McQueen etc)
I put the items on yesterday and have had two buy it now offers for two of the items which I accepted.
I then get a message from the buyer asking me to email them on their personal address as they have some questions about the item.

I have said no both times to emailing them and asked them to contact me via EBay which obviously they haven’t done. Both sellers have no history of buying or selling either. It’s so frustrating

I want to report both buyers to eBay as scammers but there is no option to. You can only raise a dispute which won’t do very much. Anyone else have any idea how to contact EBay?

Yes. Ebay is replete with scammers and Ebay don't give a rat's danglies

Just block them.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/12/2022 13:36

Yes, I sent an item to the EBay address given - it's a supermarket, have tracked delivery plus it's been signed for by a named person

Buyer says it's been delivered on tracking but they don't have it - and I'm really worried that I won't get my money even though it's definitely been delivered!

xogossipgirlxo · 14/12/2022 13:49

Yes, totally. My husband sells on ebay and number of scams is terrifying.

Scurryfunge12 · 14/12/2022 16:58

Don’t put expensive items on eBay. To be honest I have no idea why anyone still sells on there. They always side with buyers and don’t give a shit about the scams. I rarely buy on there anymore either to be honest.

eBay got way too greedy to car about the customers.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/12/2022 17:03

Many private sellers say they've stopped using it for exactly this reason; it's all very well for volume traders who can afford to absorb some of the nonsense, but for anyone just trying to shift a few bits it can be poisonous - doubly so if they're listing expensive items

Sockofthefall · 14/12/2022 17:04

Have to agree. No longer sell on eBay. Sold a designer dress, only been worn once. It was immaculate. Buyer said it was in poor condition. EBay sides with the seller. I’d rather give them to charity now.

Acheyknees · 14/12/2022 17:06

I agree with PP, don't sell anything expensive that you can't afford to lose money on. I only sell stuff that I would otherwise take to a charity shop. The scammers seem to be drawn to expensive items. My son tried to sell his xbox, the winner of the auction said he would pay once we dispatched the item and he wanted a guarantee he would receive it in 2 days!

A work colleague a few years ago needed some money urgently for a cat repair or something and was about a eeek untilshe got paid, tried all ways to raise it and considered pay day loans etc.

In the end, She took photos of gold sovereign ring she had, listed on ebay at a good price, sold it quickly, was 300 or 400 roughly she marked it as sent and didn't post. She got whatever she needed fixing fixed.

The buyer contacted her asking where it was, and she apologised and for it being lost in post and refunded. % free loan, although shocked, I idid admire her ingenuity.

Since then and having been scammed on selling something, I don't use ebay unless low value purchases.

Whammyyammy · 14/12/2022 17:11

Car repair, not cat repair. Although that's possible lol

KirstenBlest · 14/12/2022 17:13

@LaurieFairyCake , the supermarket address one will almost certainly have gone back to the depot. It's not a scam if you sent it 'signed for' or 'special delivery', the service doesn't seem to work with click & collect.

KirstenBlest · 14/12/2022 17:14

A few weeks ago, I sold four items on ebay, and two were reported as not received. Both had been signed for.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/12/2022 17:22

Car repair, not cat repair. Although that's possible lol

I loved this ... though I think it's crowdfunding you need for cat repairs rather than ebay Wink

BTW the thing about ebay never siding with sellers isn't quite right IME - they do with the volume ones who make them most commission. I've lost track of the number of times I've reported obvious fakes, fraudulent descriptions and so on, and still they're there

grubblyplank · 14/12/2022 17:31

I have something on there now and it's worth almost double the 1 bid it has with a couple of hours left Angry

KirstenBlest · 14/12/2022 17:58

@grubblyplank , they'll wait until the last minute and bid then.

I listed something designery (well-known, luxury brand) for 99p. It had loads of views and a decent amount of watchers. It sold for 99p, when I thought I'd get far more.
I think people thought it must have been fake. Buyer was delighted.
I found it quite funny.

grubblyplank · 14/12/2022 18:05

It's a phone so not a cheap item. Really annoying especially when others on worse condition have sold for far more!!

Scurryfunge12 · 14/12/2022 18:20

@grubblyplank I always found auctions get the most bids if I set them to end on a Sunday night. I guess this is the most likely time people will be at home shopping online 😂

grubblyplank · 14/12/2022 19:15

Too late now-won't be making that mistake again!
