Nappy for flying with newly trained daughter?

Morning all, we are flying to Mexico next week to spend Christmas over there. DD who is 3 has been potty trained just over a month now and is fine the majority of the time but still does have the odd accident when she can't get to a toilet quick enough. Off the top of my head the flight time is around 10hrs, I think she should have her night nappy on just in case of and accident as I would hate for someone else to sit in a wet seat. DH thinks it's not necessary. AIBU?

I think as long as you still encourage regular trips to the toilet then it’s the wisest thing to do. It’s an unusual and exciting time for a little one to be on a plane, they might be so distracted they forget. In normal circumstances, that’s fine, get them changed and move on, but like you say there’s a chance you could end up with a wet seat and then no where for her to sit for the rest of the flight. There’s also a chance that she might need a wee but the toilet on the plane is in use too.

thelobsterquadrille · 14/12/2022 08:30

Yes, she should wear one.

What if she needs to go during take off and landing, or if there's turbulence? Or what if the queue for the toilet is really long or the food trolley is blocking the aisle?

ChloMorgs1 · 14/12/2022 08:34

I would, we flew with our 4yr a few months back and I put a pull up on her and called it a "special holiday pant" still encourage her to go to the toilet but if the worst does happen then at least she's not going to have an accident.

MandaLynn · 14/12/2022 08:35

I had a similar conundrum with DS last year. I'd have her wear a pull up nappy. You never know how long you're stuck with the seatbelt sign on, if she needs the toilet during takeoff/landing, or in DS's case - waiting for everyone to get their bags and off the plane. Just explain to her it's for the plane/travel only.

MajorCarolDanvers · 14/12/2022 08:36

By night nappy do you mean pull ups.

Yes I think pull ups are a good idea.

nameymcnamechangling · 14/12/2022 08:37

I think a nappy is a sensible option. If she does have an accident it will be an awful trip in wet clothes, on a wet seat. You could take a change of clothes but the bathroom doesn't allow much room for changing

Purplestorm83 · 14/12/2022 08:38

Presumably DH is going to clean her up, change her and swap seats with her if she does wet herself? There’s no downside to putting her in a pull-up that I can see, she will probably sleep on the plane anyway so if she still wears them at night she should wear them in flight too.

You have 2 different opinions. Go with

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/12/2022 08:39

Put her in pull ups. Otherwise you can bet she’ll need to go when the seat belt sign is on - and won’t be able to wait. It could be quite a while, esp. if you hit turbulence. You can still take her to the loo as usual otherwise.

PingPongMerrilyWithPie · 14/12/2022 08:41

argh, hate this app. Go with the more conservative one. Only a month? Nappy all the way.

Maybe tell he it's special pants for aeroplanes or just in case she falls asleep.

SouperNoodle · 14/12/2022 08:41

Good idea!
Ours are 3 and 4 and we put them in pull ups on any long trip and encourage toilet trips whenever we can but if stuck in traffic jams on smart motorways, there's not much you can do so a pull up is a godsend.

Octopusmittens · 14/12/2022 08:44

Definitely use a nappy. Unfair for the staff to clean up a wet seat.

allthelittlelights · 14/12/2022 08:45

It's a long flight. Take pull ups.
Also, word of warning - Mex is bad for not having loo roll or toilet seats in the women's :)

Lindy2 · 14/12/2022 08:46

I'd definitely go with a nappy. The stress of multiple toilet visits when you may have to queue or the risk of her having an accident on the plane, would be very stressful.

I imagine she'll fall asleep at some point during the flight too which would increase the risk of an accident.

LilsKels5 · 14/12/2022 08:46

Thanks everyone, I thought that this would be the case. You never know with the queue for the cubicles or the seat belt sign etc. We have some nappies left over from potty training so will just use them.
