Sweets For NHS Staff?

DinosaurDuvet · 13/12/2022 09:53

I attend an NHS hospital clinic every month or so, I am due to go tomorrow and I would like to show my appreciation for putting up with me all year, lol.

I was thinking of handing in a few tins of sweets to reception, but then they probably get lots of sweets and are sick of them?

So am I being unreasonable to bring a few tins of sweets? If so, have you got any other ideas of what I could bring?

Panettone or Christmas cake? Something substantial like that to help them through long shifts?

RoomOfRequirement · 13/12/2022 09:54

Tea and coffee would be better if you know they're sick of sweets! Or biscuits - not even nice ones, just standard chocolate digestive and the like.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 13/12/2022 09:55

In my experience, we get a lot of sweets but are never sick of them! But if you want something different then maybe some mince pies or pastries, or fruit is always nice.

MissyB1 · 13/12/2022 09:56

Mince pies
biscuits
A couple of big panetonnes
or yes as pp suggested a Christmas cake, I’m sure Aldi will do a nice one for reasonable price.

rwalker · 13/12/2022 09:58

If it’s regular then I wouldn’t bother at Christmas I would do it later on march/April they will have plenty of gifts at Christmas
but mid year treat there not expecting would be nice to let them know you appreciate them all year round

Panetonne ?
I think it's ghastly.
I just don't get the appeal.
So dry.
Plus it would need to be cut and gets messy.
Chocolate biscuits would go down a treat I think. And easy to clear up.

ScottishBeth · 13/12/2022 10:04

I work in the NHS and I think they would appreciate sweets. If you're worried thought the idea above of doing it in a few months instead is a good one.

Balloonsandroses · 13/12/2022 10:05

As a member of nhs staff who can’t eat gluten sweets are fab and very much appreciated (biscuits etc appreciated too I just can’t join in with those!)

Agree with this. I don’t know anyone that eats them I thought everyone just regifts them!

It’s me, I’m the one eating them! And everyone I know. Hadn’t realised they were a bit Marmite.

Sweets, biscuits, chocolate, doughnuts, fruit... we'll happily eat anything 😂 If giving sweets, check if they contain gelatine as lots of staff don't eat gelatine because they are veggie or for religious reasons. Tea is a nice idea too.

More appreciated than any gift is a card though

DilemmaDelilah · 13/12/2022 11:01

What a lovely idea. If you are attending an outpatient clinic then sweets or biscuits would be great, and if you are able to get several different kinds so they include gluten free and/or vegan even better! If you are an inpatient you will know that on a very busy ward it can be difficult for the staff to have time to eat properly and something a bit more substantial than sweets would be very much appreciated. As a diabetic I always miss out on the Christmas treats as they are always laden with sugar 😟, maybe some fruit or savoury snacks?

ChristmasTunesAlready · 13/12/2022 11:04

I work in the NHS (community based in local health centres) and we never get fed up of sweets...one of our 'chocolate drawers' in the office has been empty for months now so would be very welcome here :)

Withnoshoes · 13/12/2022 11:06

crisps sweets, chocolate, tea coffee etc are all fine and appreciated. We never turn anything away on my ward. Cakes a bit annoying cos it just ends up a mess everywhere when someone doesn’t cut it properly.

Cotswoldmama · 13/12/2022 11:07

I work on reception at a doctor's surgery and chocolates and biscuits are loved by all!! They're easy to share around!

This ^^

I've worked in the NHS for nearly 40 years and there's always one panetonne that never gets eaten. Its usually shoved in a cupboard and thrown away when it reaches sell by date Grin
Best gifts are M&S chocolate biscuits.

ProserpinaProserpina · 13/12/2022 11:13

I’m currently sat in the staff room of a GP surgery. There is a LOT of biscuits 😂Conversely, there is nothing in our antenatal clinic staff room! It seems to be very hit and miss as to who gets given what. We’ll never turn down a treat though. A bit of sugar to keep us going is usually very welcome.

sleepylittlebunnies · 13/12/2022 11:14

When I worked in the NHS on the wards we had to buy our own tea bags, coffee, sugar etc so maybe tea and biscuits. Sweets and chocolates always went down well too. We were gifted bottles of wine once but the ward Sister sold raffle tickets to win them.

miceonabranch · 13/12/2022 11:15

I took some packets of biscuits in when I attended an out patients clinic a few weeks ago. I think it's nice to show appreciation as they get a lot of stick off some patients.

Yep. Panettone is a pain!

DH and I were just discussing yesterday what we’ll do with the Christmas panettone we will inevitably receive - bread and butter pudding gets my vote!

mids2019 · 13/12/2022 11:19

Lovely gesture but.....

bit patronising sweets? No one thinks about giving GPs, consultants, dentists of senior management sweets as a patient. However nurses etc. seem to be the type to appreciate choccys? Lovely gesture but in some ways highlights the 'levels' of professions in the NHS. Nurses would love a pay rise though.

Iluvfriends · 13/12/2022 11:21

Biscuits, sweets, tea and coffee always appreciated.

Crikey I bloody love panetonne! On its own or toasted with butter! And it’s nice and filling too.
