To ask if all windows are still open at your DC's schools?

So there is a parent in DS3 (year 5)'s class who is very covid conscious- big follower of independent sage and people like Deepti Gurdasani.

She's constantly been in contact with the school to demand more covid 'protections' in the school- this has resulted in DS's class having to have windows open at all times, masking, distancing etc even when these measures have no longer been required elsewhere in the school.

It has now come to a head due to the current temperatures as the teacher has closed the windows as she and the DC wee freezing. The parent has been straight into the head to complain. As far as I know there are no health issues in either parent or DC.

Are windows all still open at your DC's schools and are parents reasonable in demanding they be kept open in class?

Not sure how long they are open at ours. Hopefully they are getting enough ventilation - hard for concentration in stuffy environments and there are lots of airborne nasties going around. PP made a good suggestion for HEPA filter to help reach a compromise - proven to help concentration, help asthma, help reduce risk of viruses spreading.

Yes they're open in my dd's primary school. She says it's freezing!

Sorry about typos

It’s snowing here. The windows are shut. I’d tell this nutter parent to sling her hook and homeschool. The school should not be complying with any of this in the first place, they should be making a safeguarding referral as this parent is clearly not mentally well or stable. I’d be livid with the school if my DCs went there. I would report them to be honest, clearly whoever is charge isn’t at full mental capacity either to have gone along with this so far.

Windows open slightly in my class, once it's warmed up a bit. All the staff were getting headaches due to stuffiness plus various other issues.

No idea about other classes. We are having a covid spike just now though. Staff off poorly, and we've been asked to test daily (voluntary).

@Endofmytether2020
OP talks about the children being cold, not specifically her child.

Welshmonster · 13/12/2022 20:30

There is more to it than one parent. The rest of the class need to email in and demand stuff.
I am a teacher and always have a window open as we need fresh air. However it is open literally a crack at the moment. Not even a little finger nail width. Just to circulate as it’s so stuffy otherwise.

the teacher can refer to health and safety legislation about minimum temperatures and seek union advice as well. They must be pi&&ed off too. I’d be fuming.

unless there is some massive underlying condition that the child has that everyone doesn’t know about as private medical info.

also a quick anonymous message to your local newspaper should help things Along

Alot of our children will be living in very cold homes this winter, our priority is to keep them nice and toasty when with us. The children are all full of coughs and colds anyway (the same as every normal winter).

I think the OP could provide clarity on a lot of things. Anyway, lots of helpful suggestions on here about how ventilation including air filtration can be balanced against the cold (perhaps with dressing the children in long trousers rather than shorts as a first measure against the freezing temperatures). Waiting times are 8 hours in our local paediatric A&E and people are struggling to get paediatric antibiotics, so probably a good idea to get some fresh air in to try to reduce the amount of sick kids going into Christmas. Hopefully she's having a think about those as she hasn't come back to respond to any of the questions e..g what she meant by masking

I work in a school and we have still been advised to follow covid protocols so at least one or sometimes 2 windows are open in every classroom. We currently have half the staff off with covid so the exec head is being even more picky about open windows than he is normally. Kids are allowed to wear a fleece over their school jumper and a letter was sent home explaining this.
