Two ticks disability

Would I be unreasonable to disclose a disability on a job application and therefore get a guaranteed interview as they are 'two ticks' employers?
I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer 9 years ago. I had all the treatment- chemo, double mastectomy, radiotherapy, hysterectomy and still take medication.
I'm pretty much fine now, and you wouldn't know to look at me (unless I forgot to put my prostheses in).
Still get a bit of nerve pain.
I've found a job I really want to apply for. It will be very competitive but I'm well qualified for it.
All people who have had cancer, even if there is now no evidence of disease, are disabled under the Equality Act.
Would I be unreasonable to tick the box and therefore get an interview?

If you are disabled then yes absolutely tick that box.

I have faced this dilemma (I am ND). If you are confident you could do the job, then go for it. The only reason to consider not ticking it in my view, is if you genuinely feel you have little to no chance of being able to demonstrate the relevant competencies at interview - because you'd be putting yourself through the strain of an interview for no reason. It doesn't sound like this applies in your case. Good luck!

To note, declaring a disability only guarantees an interview if you meet all the essential criteria for the role. If you do, then go for it, you’re entitled to in law.

Itsthewhitehat · 13/12/2022 08:37

Yanbu but it’s not a guarantee of an interview.

Given the use of automatic sift or the fact that many looking through cvs and applications skim over the forms, and a tendency to exclude without rational evaluation of the Person, yes, any opportunity should be grabbed. Good luck.

panko · 13/12/2022 08:39

Go for it. That is why it is there.

NotMyDayJob · 13/12/2022 08:43

I would. I have grappled with this myself. I am a bilateral hearing aid wearer (not profoundly deaf, although I have very little hearing in one ear). I recently didn't make the sift on a job that is basically my current role, despite getting application advice from a senior leader in the industry. I worked hard and wasn't sure what else I could have done. I don't really consider myself disabled which is why I've never ticked it, but now I'm like if I don't make the sift despite my very best efforts, maybe I should be ticking it

That said, as a recruiting manager in my current role, I wouldn't do it for a job I literally couldn't do

It would not have occured to me that I would be in any way be eligible (also had cancer treatment ten years) and would feel deeply uncomfortable doing so for myself as my treatment does not affect me now in any significant way. In your case if the residual nerve pain does impact your daily functioning or if you feel that the cancer treatment impacted your career progression (e.g. do you have a gap in employment because of treatment) then I guess you would have an argument for doing so. Otherwise I think not.

Mercurial123 · 13/12/2022 08:56

No. I've been through breast cancer 13 years ago. You're not disabled.

Mercurial123 · 13/12/2022 08:58

Forgot to add, I was told a cancer diagnosis was considered disabled whilst going through chemo and radiation treatment.

Do you still have nerve pain and take medication like the OP?

Yes, I took Tamoxifen for 10 years have some nerve pain and had a hysterectomy due to side effects of the medication.
