Would you send your DD to school?

My 4yo DD has conjunctivitis, she has been prescribed antibiotics and I’ve been told if she feels well enough to go to school then she can go.

She had today off as GP in the morning and she was really run down and exhausted from not sleeping the night before due to the discomfort.

She looks awful, the skin around her eyes is red and she generally looks rubbish and tired, but she’s insistent that she wants to go to school tomorrow, because it’s her first ever nativity and she has lines that she’s been practicing really hard for.

Would you send her? I’m cautious to send her with any kind of illness considering the amount going around and how many children she’ll be mixing with and the proximity to Christmas, though both GP and Pharmacy did say she’s definitely able to go from a medical POV.
I’m also worried she’s not actually well enough and just really doesn’t want to miss her nativity, and I really don’t want her to miss it either, but not at the expense of her being in pain/uncomfortable and making herself worse.
Obviously I’ll make the decision tomorrow morning based on how she’s actually doing, and she’s had the entire days antibiotics today, but WIBU to send her in if she says she wants to go?

It really depends on whether she's well enough and/or whether a day at school could run her down more. She's only little. You'll know when you see her in the morning.

That said I'm sure it wouldn't be too detrimental for her to go. But this close to Christmas with loads going round, I'd keep at home if she's clearly Under the weather

Thank you for your reply! She’s not been massively unwell; no fever, still drinking and eating - though much preferring grazing than actual meals which happens often when she’s not feeling great.
But she has been quite quiet and generally snuggling on the sofa and having lots and lots of cuddles instead of her usual crazy self.

Her eyes look awful on sight, slightly puffy and red and generally just obviously uncomfortable, though she was very adamant at bedtime that they didn’t hurt like last night and the medicine was working.
I just really don’t want to tell her she can’t go to her nativity only for her to be bouncing around all day, or send her in and set her back in recovering, it’s so difficult to judge when they’re so little isn’t it!

What time is the nativity? If it’s first thing can you just take her home after?

HappiCamper · 12/12/2022 22:47

Isn’t it really contagious?

Whatwouldyoudo24 · 12/12/2022 22:49

Nativity is at 2.30, I’m in two minds about calling the school in the morning and seeing if she could come in a bit later if I decide to keep her off and actually she’s bounces back.

Why not let her do the nativity then bring her home? My DS always got eye styes 2 weeks before half term and the end of term, he was so tired and run down from school life. This went on until year 4.

Whatwouldyoudo24 · 12/12/2022 22:52

The GP and pharmacy said that it won’t be contagious as she’ll have been on her antibiotics for just over 24 hours, it shocked me too. I’m sure we had to stay off school for the majority of conjunctivitis when I was at school!
But I asked a couple times and they said the only reason to keep her off is if she’s feeling too unwell to go.

@CidleyDidley I think I’ll speak to the school and see what they think if I’m still really not sure if she’s just saying she’s okay because she doesn’t want to miss the nativity, hopefully they’ll agree for her to be able to come in for just the afternoon or something!
That must have been awful for you and your DS, they are so uncomfortable and it’s so hard to help when it’s eyes.

It's fine to go in with conjunctivitis if she is on antibiotics. The antibiotics normally work fairly quickly for conjunctivitis so with any luck she will feel much better tomorrow.

Mariposista · 12/12/2022 23:10

Please let her do her nativity if she feels ok to do it. Even if she just goes for this. She will feel so upset and stressed if you don't let her.

AliceMcK · 12/12/2022 23:11

Call the school and ask if she can come in just to do the nativity. My eldest DD had a bad ear infection for her first nativity, I took her in just to do it then took her home. Next DD, tummy bug for her first, she has been 36hours clear, school said just bring her in so she didn’t miss it.
