2 of my sisters have sons with the same name .. caused a huge rift that took months to settle

I grew up knowing boys who were first cousins (mothers were identical twins) .. each family had a David in it

You should feel flattered but I woulod find it a bit odd. Maybe it has a meaning for the baby's father and he insisted.

kayzr · 01/02/2008 21:17

Maybe she just really loves the name

MsHighwater · 01/02/2008 21:21

Once upon a time it would have been nothing unusual. I'm sure you'll get used to it.

pardonme · 01/02/2008 21:34

maybe it is compliment-just bit strange.maybe i'll have a dd and name it same as hersthat would be odd!

I would take it as a compliment! This happened to my Mum and Dad, they adopted my sister just after I was born.. Several years later my Auntie (my Mums sister) gave birth to a daughter and gave her the same name as DS and to top it they have the same middle name! Lucky for both of them they have different surnames - its quite strange really as my Auntie is absolutely gorgeous - in fact I prefer her to my own mother!!!!! (but thats a different story!) So I don't think for one minute my Auntie was copying!

mynaughtylittlesister · 01/02/2008 21:41

Have just realised that DS stands for dear son and should read DEAR SISTER

divamummy2 · 01/02/2008 21:43

seems it happened to many mners. i remember the same post last year, as both sisters had thomas, some people get hurt but some take it compliment. i

Chuffinnora · 01/02/2008 21:47

Dh is still called little Mark in his family despite being 6'2" because his older cousin is also Mark (but is only 5'10"ish and that confuses anyone who only knows them as adults)

RustyBear · 01/02/2008 21:52

My sister & SIL both have sons called Christopher and Alexander - luckily we didn't call DD Alexandra, which DH wanted. I also have a brother & a BIL called Andrew.

figroll · 01/02/2008 21:53

Well my husband's brother called his dog by the same name as my dd! I was truly offended - he sits there and calls her over to him and my dd looks up every time.

Am I being unreasonable? There are so many names (look at the naming a baby thread) why on earth call your daughter or dog by the same name as someone else in the family.

figroll · 01/02/2008 21:53

Sorry I didn't realise that you had a boy - apologies.

hannahsaunt · 01/02/2008 21:57

I think, in theory, it's all very well to say take it as a compliment but I would be upset. In terms of all the children of friends and relatives, when someone says the name 'x' then I think of that person, as an individual and not stop and think and wonder who is meant. I wouldn't be thrilled at someone close using the same name as one one of my children (2 people have said recently that they had been contemplating using ds3's name for their new ones so have been pondering).

HeadHeartorHormones · 01/02/2008 22:16

Some people know the names they would like to give their children before they have even met their partner. Maybe she was quite upset 7 years ago when you chose it for your ds but has decided to stick with it anyway. Must admit, I wouldn't like it and have automatically ruled out names already in use by close friends of family. Pehaps she'll volunteer some information on it some day.

HeadHeartorHormones she apparently hadnt thought until couple of days ago.so not some name she'd always had in mind.we live in small place-im not only one thinks is odd-although im probably only one not to have said isnt your stepsister ds called same.

i dont want my ds name to be shortened so really hope the family dont do that.

it is very common name so i theres loads of others but just might be confusing at say grandparents-yours or mine?

HeadHeartorHormones · 01/02/2008 22:28

Oh - just plain odd then. Sorry.

hifi · 01/02/2008 22:33

my sister has 2 names of her dd that i liked, she beat me to it.

sometimes you have a name you love and will use it whatever, amazes me when you meet someone and they say "whats her name" you say "mini hifi" they then say in a very off tone "ooh thats what we want to call our baby if we have a girl".

maggymay · 02/02/2008 10:56

I am named after my grand mother and so are two of my cousins it never really caused a problem I was maggymay and my cousins where maggy+middlename it worked well and didnt seem strange. I quiet enjoyed being one of three I have never seen a problem using the same name as someone else and some names are just popular.
