For Christmas?

name changed as I’m likely to be ripped to shreds for this one, but AIBU to give my cleaner some John Lewis vouchers for Christmas or should I give cash?

OP posts:

We give an extra weeks wages plus a nice hamper this year. All depends on how happy you are with their service.

Sleepeazie · 12/12/2022 21:43

I’m a cleaner. I’d be very happy. I actually like the fact you appreciate that I too can enjoy shopping at, and that I am as familiar as the next person at shopping at, a pricey-ish department store - rather than assuming that I’m more cash strapped and in need, than any other working person/trades person you might employ. It makes me feel appreciated and like there isn’t a hierarchy of economic status, which tbh with the vast majority of my clients there isn’t.

thelobsterquadrille · 12/12/2022 21:44

Cash is a much better option.

RaRaRaspoutine · 12/12/2022 21:44

Do cleaners not shop in John Lewis then? Bunch of snobs on this thread.

BCBird · 12/12/2022 21:45

Not JL vouchers. Chs ces are he/she does not shop there. It is expensive. Know it got a lovely stuff.

Lolreally · 12/12/2022 21:46

I did a sarky post about the mad snobbery then lost it, but yeah basically she is a cleaner so poor and working class so John Lewis isnt for the likes of her seems to be the message.

WGACA · 12/12/2022 21:46

I give me cleaner cash.

If my employer gave me the choice of vouchers or cash for a Christmas bonus, I'd take cash every time. Wouldn't you?Nothing to do with snobbery!

dizzydizzydizzy · 12/12/2022 21:47

Cash. You can spend it anywhere.

MrsMitford3 · 12/12/2022 21:47

Sorry seems super patronising to me

Why wouldn't you give her cash an let her spend it how she pleases?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/12/2022 21:48

Cash.
Or cash and a bottle of something/ some chocolates

LBFseBrom · 12/12/2022 21:48

I'm sure she would be glad and John Lewis vouchers are versatile, for example you can use them in Waitrose.

However cash would be better.

4yearsandwaiting · 12/12/2022 21:48

I'm on a low income and would welcome supermarket vouchers or cash rather than an expensive shop which I would feel uncomfortable going into.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/12/2022 21:49

For those who say why not JL - if you give cash she can spend it in JL if she wants! Or Harrods, or the pound shop or anywhere in between.

Lcb123 · 12/12/2022 21:49

If you prefer vouchers over cash; can you get those Love2Shop ones you can get in the post office? As then a choice of shops. But cash also fine. Or something edible

dontknowwhatisbest · 12/12/2022 21:49

I'll be giving cash for her (approx 1.5x the cost of a visit) plus a £25 amazon gift card for each of her children (she always gets little gifts for our kids, which is very kind of her)

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 12/12/2022 21:50

How close is your nearest JL? Because we don't have one (or a Waitrose) within 50 miles.

Assume they can be used online.

I would go with cash, OP.

Cash. I got some John Lewis vouchers for my birthday and there's not a single thing I want from there

Not a single thing - its sells 100,000 of items of EVERYTHING.

MillyMollyManky · 12/12/2022 21:52

Im assuming OP has some JL vouchers, perhaps from using their credit card. If so, I don’t think that’s a bad gift- my cleaner would love it.

If you’re planning to buy the vouchers specially, give cash instead.

And pay postage.

SapphireEyes88 · 12/12/2022 21:54

If you give a JL voucher, please make sure it's enough to buy something from there! I was given a voucher for there once and ended up selling it to a more well off friend as couldn't afford the extra 🤦🏻‍♀️

threelittlefigs · 12/12/2022 21:56

What's wrong with John Lewis vouchers?

-You can but almost anything there.
-You can use the voucher at Waitrose.
-There's the option to use online or in store.

I'd go with giving her the JL voucher. Of all the vouchers you could buy someone, JL would be by far the best option, surely?

The snobbery is staggering

carefulcalculator · 12/12/2022 21:57

Cash or M&S. JL is too expensive for a lot of things, IMO.
