Asthma wheeze

Ive a mild cold but awful asthma today. I work outside and had to go home. I’m breathless but manageable if I don’t move around. I probably couldn’t have a proper conversation due to breathing. Blue inhaler isn’t doing much (10 puffs taken about a minute apart helps but not to the point I could go upstairs in one go), and only for 30 mins or so.

GP is phoning me later this afternoon. Im doing the right thing in staying home and not looking for other help... aren’t I?

Honestly if 10 puffs of blue isn’t given you any relief for at least and hour or 2 I’d say you need steroids and nebuliser asap.

Fragmentsof2022 · 12/12/2022 14:05

Yup, I’d be seeking urgent help if the blue one isn’t working. When my DS gets to this point, we take him to A&E

JenniferBarkley · 12/12/2022 14:09

Yes if I was struggling to get up the stairs after ten puffs I'd be heading to A&E. Good luck Flowers

Fragmentsof2022 · 12/12/2022 14:11

OP, can you get to A&E? Call 111 for advice- they will prioritise - they sent an ambulance for DS last time but it was actually quicker for us to take him- but they’ll advise

Fragmentsof2022 · 12/12/2022 14:15

In fact, Asthma U.K. guidance is if you can’t go 4 hours, are breathless when walking about and inhaler isn’t helping, call 999 - hope you are ok OP xx

A&E for nebuliser and steroids, on day 6 in hospital with asthma flare up myself. It seems to be a bad winter for asthmatics this year. Lots of us in hospital. Hope you feel better soon.

kimlo · 12/12/2022 14:17

I would be going to a+e. They should get you on a neb pretty quickly.

Saz12 · 12/12/2022 14:24

... and of course, no time after posting this I start to feel a bit better! The power of mumsnet. GP phoning in next 30 minutes, so against your good advice (I know, why ask if I’m not going to take it???!) I’m going to wait until then unless I get worse again.

@Saz12 as long as you are ok!! I’m always on heightened alert with my DS and Asthma as he’s been in hospital every 18 months since he was a baby and he’s now 14 so sorry if I went nuclear 😂 Asthma freaks me out!!

Dis626 · 12/12/2022 14:29

If your blue inhaler isnt working I'd be going to A&E. Don't try and be a hero. I ended up in hospital really ill last year as i left it for too long thinking I'd be fine. My asthma had always been mild so it came as a real shock to me. I hope you are feeling better soon

FeedMeSantiago · 12/12/2022 15:29

I'd be going to A&E - sounds like an asthma attack. Better safe than sorry.

SeenAndNot · 12/12/2022 15:55

You need to be in A&E, hopefully GP will call you quickly

Saz12 · 12/12/2022 21:05

Thanks all - GP prescribed steroids & said to go straight to a&e if it gets worse (or as bad as it was this morning in the frosty air!). She thinks it’s likely to settle without a neb with the steroids if I stay out of cold air.

@CoffeethenCrochet hope you’re home soon.
@Fragmentsof2022 my DC was similar, but has broadly grown out of it. I wonder when I will...?!?

If you need to go outside use a buff over your mouth to help heat air coming in. I hope you are better soon.
