To think six year olds don’t need training bras?

MedwayWay · 12/12/2022 12:54

No early puberty involved, brightly coloured crop top/training bra under white school shirt so quite visible.

I’m not sure if this is as weird as I think it is, or if I’m being a prude. When I was younger, girls wore them from year 5/6, when some in the class started to develop.

Absolutely ridiculous

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 12/12/2022 13:06

My nearly 6 year old still wears a vest when it's cold! No way do they need a crop top type thing on. Ridiculous.

Why are they in such a hurry to make their child appear older than she is? Does the girl have older sisters?

HypaHypa · 12/12/2022 13:12

Yr3 DD requested a crop top start of school term. The ones she has are more like a half vest. I did let her try the more bra looking croptops on and it was a resounding no from DD, she just wanted the brightly coloured ones.

Fairylightsandstuff · 12/12/2022 13:15

As in a crop top? Or a first bra type thing?

sheepdogdelight · 12/12/2022 13:18

6 is very early, but I think it's not uncommon for 8 and maybe even 7 year old girls to wear these. Certainly a large number of the girls in DD's Year 4 class were wearing them.

I guess the advantage of getting them young is they are not embarrassed by them showing under a school shirt, as a slightly older child might be

NerrSnerr · 12/12/2022 13:21

I really think it's best not to judge other people's underwear choices. They clearly have their reasons, they may not be good reasons in your opinion but you don't know what they are.

Don't give other people's 6 year old's underwear a second thought. None of your business.

ReadyForPumpkins · 12/12/2022 13:22

DC1 had asked for a crop top when she was quite young, can't remember what year of school. I humoured her and got her one. She wore it only for a few days. She wanted one because her best friend was wearing one. The best friend has an older sister, so I think that's where the influence was from.

Why does it bother you if that's what the girl wanted. I drew the line only if it's sexualising the child.

Something like this. So not a bra but definitely an undergarment: link

@MedwayWay whose child is this OP?

If it's your child then when they're in your care you can decide on their underwear.

If it's not your child it's none of your business.

In the UK girls wear bikini tops (or a one piece) at this age too rather than just trunks, so why not a cropped top?

Onceuponaheartache · 12/12/2022 13:29

My dd wore them from being 6.

She was conscious when getting changed for pe and found long vests uncomfortable.

Her aerolaare quite dark and under her thinner t shirts can be visible.

She has white ones for school and coloured ones for other days.

Why exactly does it bother you so much??

Anewhoo · 12/12/2022 13:31

I used to wear these. I can’t see what’s wrong with them. Also used to wear bright pants, pjs etc. if you don’t like them, don’t buy them. I can’t really see what your problem is?

Irridescantshimmmer · 12/12/2022 13:31

Omg

MithrilCostsMore · 12/12/2022 13:31

My youngest word crop tops like this from a similar age. Her sister who was two years older than her had some and she preferred them to plain white vests.

TheWorldKickedBack · 12/12/2022 13:34

My daughter wore one from age 6 as the logo on her school shirt rubbed against her nipple making it sore and she would get too hot in a full vest. Can't see the problem.

GreenManalishi · 12/12/2022 13:35

There's a difference between the concept of a crop top, which is essentially a short vest, and a "training bra" on a six year old, but neither of them on another persons' child as undergarments would spark enough concern in me for it to be an issue.

MedwayWay · 12/12/2022 13:41

It’s my stepdaughter. DH thinks it’s far too young and I wondered if times have changed since I was at school (our daughter is younger and not at school yet).

Stepdaughter’s mum chooses and buys clothes for her house and we do for our house. Stepdaughter has never expressed much of an opinion except for her favourite colour and new party dresses! DH and I have been together since she was two (her parents separated when she was a baby) and I usually buy all the children’s clothes.

She’s always in much more grown-up clothes at her mum’s (little heels, lacy tops, make-up, fake leather, crop tops in all weathers) but the bra thing is new. We’re not going to say anything, but wondering if this is the norm nowadays for year 1. We send her to school in white vests when it’s cold, and would probably get her white crop tops if she specifically asked, but she hasn’t asked us yet.

Thank you to all the posters who have replied.

Maybe she just liked them. Maybe the parents don't want her to have to be responsible for being some shining example of correcting all the wrongs in the world that befall women and girls at the hands of innocent clothing choices and wanted her to just be able to wear something she liked and picked out.

I guess 6 is not too young to have to consider the feelings of adults when they choose their underwear 🙄🙁

This ^ and the subsequent replies.

When you're the child's mum you can dictate what she wears under her shirt but until then: it doesn't concern you. There may be a multitude of reasons she and her mum has for wearing a crop top that she may not be comfortable sharing.

In the meantime: stop sexualising a child.

KilmordenCastle · 12/12/2022 13:50

My 7yo asked for crop tops rather than vests this year because she thinks they are more grown up. I saw no issue with it so bought them. She lasted about 20 minutes wearing one before declaring that's its uncomfortable 🙄 so I had to get vests anyway.

I don't see any problem with young girls wearing cropped vests. I see an issue with training bras before breasts are developing as there is no earthly reason but cropped vests aren't training bras.

Dd 6 asked for them as she finds full length ones uncomfortable , used to crop in dance. She’s in 8-9 clothes but I found as she went up in size the straps fell down ridiculously . So I figured crop vests are better than none.
