Is this a reasonable request of a nanny?

Ok so... please hear me out as I have never before had a nanny or considered one - I will openly admit I know nothing about the services they are willing to offer.

Can anyone who has either been a nanny or had one, tell me whether it's a reasonable ask to pay someone to come to my home for literally 1 hour every morning to help with the morning routine? That's all I need. Nothing more.

Or would they all laugh at me for being ridiculous?

Childcare.co.uk is a good site. There maybe someone willing to do it for £15 an hour = £75 a week. Nice little earner for someone local

Lcb123 · 12/12/2022 10:48

You may as well ask / look but I do think you'd struggle, assuming they'd need to travel to your house the hours pay would probably wipe out their travel cost

solomam · 12/12/2022 10:48

Thanks @DunkingMyDonuts

Its actually only 4 days I would need so £60 a week. A price worth paying though for the stress it would remove from my life!

No one will laugh at you but realistically it's a role that only a few people would be interested in so it might be hard to find someone and you might have to pay quite a high hourly rate

dancemom · 12/12/2022 10:49

I'd be looking for a mothers help or even a childcare student who is available?

MolesOnPoles · 12/12/2022 10:49

Do you need an actual nanny (which qualifications insurance, ofsted, whatever…..), or just someone competent and friendly who can help?

I suspect it would be tough to find a nanny for this as it won’t fit easily with other jobs, but more of an old fashioned mothers help might work. Second PPs request of Childcare.co.uk

Kanaloa · 12/12/2022 10:50

I don’t think it’s unreasonable as such or that people will laugh at you… but I think you’re unlikely to get any takers.

I mean think of it from their perspective - most nannying jobs will want someone at that time so by agreeing to work for an hour a day for you they’ll be barring themselves from any other jobs.

FawnFrenchieMum · 12/12/2022 10:50

Its not an unreasonable request but you would be limited on who would accept it. It might suit someone retired or a nanny currently doing after school care for example.

Cinecitta · 12/12/2022 10:51

Only someone very local to you who could walk to your place. Nobody would commute for only 1 hour of work, considering the cost and time.

StaringAtTheWater · 12/12/2022 10:51

You can ask, but I think you will struggle to find someone for such a small number of hours, unless you get lucky and someone very local is interested. We couldn't even find an after school nanny for 3 hours a day!

SomeBeings · 12/12/2022 10:51

What about a Uni student or sixth form student. It's not an unreasonable request at all.

Good point. Not necessarily a nanny, just someone competent who can help... I'd be in the house with them the entire time, just getting myself ready while they sorted my child. That's my vision, anyway!

Is there a highschool student nearby who could help, I don't see anything wrong with what you want justnot sure anyone 'official' would take it up

solomam · 12/12/2022 10:52

@Kanaloa

The time frame I need is 6-7 am. So possibly before other jobs?

OP posts:
EmmetEmma · 12/12/2022 10:54

I think you will find someone but I think that maybe as it is so early you may need to pay a little more than £15

Quite possibly but how would I go about finding / approaching one? I'm guessing they'd be unlikely to advertise officially on websites etc...

@EmmetEmma

Yes... good point! 6am doesn't seem early to me as it's my get up time every day (if not 5.30!) so I forget that's actually insanely early to most people 😂

Thus is exactly the sort of job I'd have been happy to do in 6th form... Minimal time for a wadge of cash.

I'd ask on any local FB groups? Approach any youth leaders you know?

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 12/12/2022 10:57

Or approach a lox care agency... If you pay enough you'll get someone

Wow. Helpful. Thank you.

How do you know I don't have a newly diagnosed disability that makes this extremely hard now? Or whether I'm recently bereaved and used to have my partner's / a family member's help?

Try to think of something constructive to say before you comment. 👍🏻

You could email your local sixth form college to see if they could pass the advert on to those doing childcare courses. Also if you lived relatively rural could you advertise in the back of the parish magazine?

Good luck!

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 12/12/2022 10:59

Approach the local 6th form?

Approach the local FE college offering child care courses?

solomam · 12/12/2022 10:59

@IamtheDevilsAvocado

Would you have done it at 6am though? 😆

minipie · 12/12/2022 10:59

You might find someone who would do this if they happened to live or work nearby. Your best bet would probably be an au pair or live in nanny who lives locally, or maybe a local teenager who’s happy to get up early (do they exist?) for the cash.

Advertise on local forums/facebook and maybe on childcare.co.uk.

However it does seem a bit surprising that you can’t manage to get yourself and child ready. What’s taking the time? Can you do any of it the night before?
